Fable III

Anyone know how to launch this without gfwl?
I was reinstalling this on my new pc when i remembered the horror that is gfwl. The only way i had got it to work before was by installing microsoft flight (strangely it had a more recent version than their site) so now that gfwl is down im back to the black screen, square one.

Point of this is I remember before I figured out how to work it, I was using a file or something ( i think the file was xlive.dll or something along those lines) that bypassed gfwl. Anyone know what I'm talking about or have an alternative?

You'll need to disable GFWL using the xlive.dll in that thread. This means that you will not be able to play multiplayer. Also if you want/need to open the Demon Door in Mistpeak Valley there is a workaround using a LUA script, but that's a different topic entirely.

If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to help the best I can.

Thanks for that! I couldnt remember for the life of me where the dlc fix had been posted last :D

No problem! Just a word of caution: I couldn't get my existing save to work with that method, so I had to start a new game.

All my save files are lost anyways so that no problem :d

SO i've got the game working fine with the .dll file - but it appears that won't work with all the DLC.

Is there any way to get the multiplayer working again along with all the DLC i've bought? Without the .dll file, I just get a black screen on startup.

Sorry to hear that Ash. Just to double check, you made a DLC folder in the main directory and three sub-folders for each DLC right?

Did you also download and replace all the files with the 1.1.1.3 update from the Reddit link?

If you did and the game worked fine with the dll from the 15d archive then you should see a new folder in your main directory called XLiveEmu.

The last thing I can suggest is make sure that the ID for your save folder is the same as the ID in the xlive.ini

I'm not sure how much of a bearing this has on the functionality since my number is only 13 digits long, but I've made sure they're both the same and it works for me.

If removing the xlive.dll and ini is giving you a black screen then I can only suggest to verify game files in Steam. Get rid of all the other folders like the DLC folder and the XLiveEmu folder. Verifying files in Steam will overwrite the files from the 1.1.1.3 folder if you did that. You should be back to normal then.

Thanks for the reply.

I've not tried to replace all the files with the 1.1.1.3 update. The only thing I have done is install the xlive.dll file - which has alllowed me to progress past the black screen.

However, is there a workable solution to play with online connectivity whilst enabling the DLC? It appears to me that offline is the only option, unless I'm misundertanding. I can't find any way to install the DLC now that GFWL doesn't work.

Regards,

Ash

No you can't because GFWL will check your online ID and only verify the DLC that you bought. The .dll file emulates GFWL. It doesn't remove it like the one on the first page. So offline is the only option to use all the DLC released for PC (including a lot of the pre-order stuff).

It's next to impossible to find valid GFWL DLC keys anymore.

So I've got the fable-xlive in a separate folder like you did those photos some years ago, but it doesn't let me unzip. Do you or anyone else know why?

Do you have a program installed for unzipping files? I think it’s built into most OS now but if it’s not on yours I use 7zip

Thank you. I downloaded 7zip and it works now

For anyone curious, this still works in 2019 even though the link provided is bad. I followed this one to get it to work flawlessly. It even comes with a readme explaining how to install. A big thanks to Ra Dappa for the tip.
