Fable III

Fable III

How to get this running on Windows 11?
I used to play fine on Windows 10, but now after upgrading to Windows 11 the game won't even launch. I hit play and it'll instantly crash. Nothing pops up or anything just instant crash.

I've tried the guides and downloaded the xlive files and it still won't launch.

You need to put the xlive.dll directly into the Fable 3 steam file on your cpu. I used the xlive.dll download file from the ModDB website, it is safe and the game runs perfectly for me. If you search google for xlive.dll fable 3 you should find it ok.

I have done that and it just crashes the second I hit play.

There are a couple of guides on steam that show how to get it working.
I just re-installed this yesterday and have it working on Windows 11 with all the DLC.

I also had problems installing the game Fable 3 via STEAM.

After hundreds of failures I landed on the page mentioned below and what can I say...
except a thousand times THANKS to Garrett, it FINALLY worked!

https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1012-microsoft-games-for-windows-live/page/2

Info:

I own a high-end PC from 2024, operating system Windows 11 Home.

I got it to work, even though there was a lot of talk about it not running/working/dead since 201X, etc...

I combined the above installation instructions from this site with some other information from the web... maybe that's why it works (for me).

And I hope that it will work for many others too, unfortunately I can't promise anything.

My approach:

PC default settings:

If the STEAM program is not installed on the Windows (C:) partition, but on another partition (e.g. drive (D:)/Steam),
please uninstall Fable III from there.
After uninstalling there should now be a folder with the “steam_appid” file in your partition on Steam/Steamapps/common/Fable 3 left.
! Don't delete this !

Quit Steam now.

Now make sure that you have installed the following Microsoft DirectX versions on the Windows (C:) partition:

Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 RS
Windows 8 / Windows RT / Windows 8.1 / Windows Server 2012 / Windows Server 2012 R2

Windows 10 and Windows 2016 Technical Preview
(This is already integrated into the operating system of PCs with WIN10 / WIN11!)
If you have deleted it for whatever reason or have not installed it, please install it.

All files can be found on the Microsoft website or via Google for download.

Now go to your computer's PC settings and your PC APPs, as described in the download above, and search for
"Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace"
and
"Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable"
and delete these two files.
If you don't have these two files there, this step can be skipped.
Close all windows and return to the desktop.

Installation procedure:

Now you can download the file stored on the Page mention above and unzip it via .zip or .7zip.
5 files will appear on your desktop (or where you save your downloads):

File 1: “gfwlclient”,
File 2: “gfwlsetup”,
File 3: “wllogin_32”
File 4: “wllogin_64”
File 5: “xliveredist”.

Now create a folder called “Games For Windows Live” in Windows (C:),
and move these 5 files there.

! Please only move from “Desktop” to “Windows (C:)/Games for Windows Live”!

Now run “gfwlsetup” in the “Windows (C:)/Games For Windows Live”-folder.

Then close all folders.

Open Steam again.

Now reinstall Fable 3 via Steam,

! but this time on the Windows (C:) partition !

Where the operating system is installed (usually Windows (C:).

STEAM then creates a folder in Windows (C:): “C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fable 3”, where all files can be found.

If you downloaded Fable 3 on (C:), locate Fable 3 in the Steam library,
Right click on the game,
Select “Properties”,
then “installed files” and browse the files.

should be C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fable 3.

In “C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fable 3”
search for “F3Secu”,
Right click on properties,
Compatibility, run under “Windows XP (ServicePack 3),
and run as “administrator” (click on the boxes), save.

Then search for “Fable 3(.exe)” below
right click on “Properties”, “Compatibilities”,
run it in “Windows 7 mode”.
and run it as “administrator” (click on the boxes), save.

Then search for “FableLauncher(.exe)” below
right click on “Properties”, “Compatibilities”,
run it in “Windows 7 mode”.
and run it as “administrator” (click on the boxes), save.

Start Fable 3 via STEAM now.

Now sign in with Xbox Live (or click HOME above to open GFWL)

This is how it worked for me.

I hope this post helps to make this game accessible again for some!

Best regards

Microsoft still selling this game and not supporting it while also asking people to wish-list Fable 4 pretty much sums them up as a company.

The only reason this game doesn't work is because of their stupid launcher.

It was delisted from Steam, but you can still buy it from Amazon.

Amazon isn't Microsoft, those are just surplus keys.

Microsoft de-listing this game instead of actually removing GFWL and other crap copy-protection is seriously a travesty to the game, series, and PC gaming. At least there are redneck ways to get it to work, but no one should have to go through it. Microsoft published the game. They could have spared a few coders to unscrew the game. Probably wouldn't have had to de-list it and still made a few bucks off it.

So you're telling me in this whole industry that there's not one Developer who can remove a DRM?

If that's true we're screwed.

Bro forgets the fact that, as I quite literally alluded to in my comment, Microsoft does exist and they published the game. Say what you want about them (I know I make my point at every opportunity I get), I suspect they have one or two basement dwellers with the "know-how" to strip DRM from the games they have 'PUBLISHED'.

But, whatever I guess.. I'm with you. We're just totally screwed.

You would need the source code in order to replace xbox live with steam, a competent dev could do it but please go on tell me how they're supposed to
