Don`t give players too much to do. For each position make a choice between running the ball, through balls, forward runs and long shots. Set long balls for the backs and direct for the midfielders.
The second thing is opposition instructions. This is the most tedious bit about FM 09 because you really do need to manually click all the attacking opponents and backs to set defensive tasks. Otherwise you`re likely to totally lose markings and not close down no matter how obvious it is.
I always set show onto weaker foot for everyone except center backs and the keeper, tight marking on forwards and AMCs, closing down on all midfielders and check during half time for advice from the AM for players to set hard tackles on. If you don`t do this you`re probably going to lose and it`s boring as hell. You even need to pay attention to when players are moved around the pitch and adjust all this crap. If a midfielder is moved into attack without you noticing and you don`t have tight marking you`ll see him run free on goal again and again.
This stuff is what really makes the 2009 edition the worst one yet. It`s terribly tedious and requires an enormous amount of micro managing of something the players should really be doing by themselves.
