Would be nice if there was some sort of map indicator for reaching those islands that you didn't reach before finishing the game once you reach the ending.

Could simply be footsteps like had been used up til then.

I basically can see the locations of said islands that I have not yet reached but a lot of times reaching said islands are a giant question mark.

I basically go "Is it this island? Or that island? Is it an island far away?" and take a lot of times just looking around for some sort of pathway.

I'd understand this possibly making it a bit too easy, but at the same time it would be helpful.

Currently in the same boat, finished the main game and looking at other islands I missed, but I'm kind of lost since the map is so big and the potential for rafts make the progression options a little unclear. I don't want to look up guides or anything, but I don't even know where to begin.

You may try and get some pointers from my guide which is as spoiler free as possible while still providing solutions for all puzzles. Especially if you're looking for snowmen there is a section in the beginning that only lists islands that provide access to those islands.
