Yeah, messing with the game files, simular to what people did with Rome: Total wars campaign.

The final Road to Independence Campaign basically is the Grand Campaign for the US, it is just starts in 1783 instead of 1700. The entire map is available.

Yeah, most people just continue playing after the last chapter to the Road to Independence Campaign. It's just like doing the grand campain, except you are America. Already I have taken the U.K., most of Africa, and all of the American theater. It's quite a interesting play.

Logically, there is no US in grand campaign.
Afaik, the nation declared independence in 1783 and the GC starts in 1700

Messing with the game files. I remember a time of joy when I unlocked Carthage in RTW...

Um, all you had to do is kill Carthage with Rome (or anyone else) to unlock them. No need to edit files for Carthage.

After I achieve freedom, I get kicked back to the main menu and can't continue the campaign. Anyone else had this problem?

Yep! Same here.. I have a vague memory (Or I was dreaming) that you could continue even after achieved freedom before the first patchings.. Might be that if you want to continue to play a little longer, is to avoid to take the last Victorycondition territory.. Play on, and just before time gets out, then storm the last territory.

After you beat the 3rd level on that, it does kick you, but when you go back, it is unlocked and avaible for play

Yeah, there's a fourth "window" which is simply called "United States" It starts in the 1780's, and you need to take a certain amount of territories as well as specific ones by the year 1825. After doing this and/or reaching 1825 you can continue you to play on just like you can in the grand campaign.

When I go back to it after it kicks me, it is always on the turn before I took the last territory. I keep trying to quickly save it after I take the last territory, but it just kicks me back to the menu again. Is there something I need to do to get to the fourth part that I've missed?

I have v1.50 and only recently discovered Birth of a Nation (I through IV), but I did not recall the whole series when I first got the game many years ago and I tell ya, I've really enjoyed it.
