Is fire and advance broken or just useless?
I think I should be using fire and advance to give my line cover as I try to move it in for melee, but I suffer too many casualties when engaging another line of infantry that is just staying put. In fact, I lose more troops to fire and advance than I would by just charging them.

Is it broken or useless? Or am I just using it wrong?

Useless. TW games very rarely, if ever manage to create a situation where FaA drill is an useful option. Also, the game mechanics are a bit not in its favour.

It's broken in both Empire and Napoleon. Something to do with how its coded. That's why it sucks.

Worked fine for me in Napoleon. It was good with grenadiers because it gives them more overall firepower, and you can get into melee faster.

I found limited use for it. Its handy for grenadiers at times, but for any other infantry I find they just get torn up before they get close.... they just don't advance quickly enough. Sure they shoot back, but you're better off just charging so the enemy doesn't get as many volleys off.

Well, this is definitely the case in ETW. But in NTW, most units are just glorified militia so only the first rank fires. FaA allows grenadiers in NTW to compensate for their slower reload.

I haven't played NTW. I'll take your word for it.

Grenadiers are useless anyways. Grenades do nearly no damage and they are sort of suicide charge unit anyways, given their small size, high cost and somewhat good melee.

In ETW, or in NTW? In NTW, I agree, despite a larger unit size, they are rather useless. In ETW, however, they get results.

I just know they are good in melee but I've hardly experimented with them myself

I was talking about NTW. In NTW grenadier is king.

Grenadier units are quite usefull. BUT the Fire and Advance technology isn't worth it imo. Fire by Rank has more effect and a cavalry charge to stop the enemy line from firing followed by an infarntry charge is better to get your melee going. Get your cavalry out before they're slaughtered ofcourse.
