Yeah it's funny, Rome had this kind of thing as did Midieval 2. I had a crash in Empire just today not from an end of turn but by clicking on a rake and panning the camera to the right to move him out of his movement range for that turn.
CA does a good job of making their games fun, but making them work? They do an "okay" job of that. To put it this way, I've played hundreds of hours of Total War games, more crashes than I can count. Rome 2 however, I've only had one. Diablo 3, hundreds and hundreds of hours, maybe three crashes. All three because of driver/out of date OS issues. Some games are just like that I suppose.
Your savefile might have been corrupt, or are you playing on a different machine?
