I just had to remove the hearties because I managed to make it into a rhyme :P
Thanks for all the feedback!
1. Reload a game and never allow the US to come into existence
2. If the US already exists, reload a game and make sure to wipe the US out before he is recruited as a commander
3. If you can't do 1 or 2, then immediately declare war on the US. If possible, defeat the army he is attached to but without killing him. For me, i did this and it was just Croucher and an artillery unit. I then proceeded to fence him in with 8 separated units, because any move he would make after that would immediately trigger a battle which he obviously could not win. I then destroyed the US to the point they only had one region left. I surrounded that region with a few stacks of troops to make sure they could never venture outside of that region again. If the US was at war with any other nations, i was sure to declare war on those other nations if they tried to finish off the US. You would need to do the same if anybody came to kill off Croucher. I therefore completely isolated them but also protected them. This allowed me to play the rest of the game without any crashes.
I had a problem for ages where whenever a light dragoon unit tried to fire from the saddle during a battle the game crashed. Got to the point where that only way to play through an entire campaign was to avoid recruiting Light Dragoons and ensuring that I auto-resolved any battle where the AI was using them. Then suddenly it stopped happening and i can only assume that something sorted out the issue in the data files or code.
The other problem I still get but is non-fatal is some weird saved game corruption that causes Artillery and Generals and certain cavalry units to suddenly consist of 160 models. So, for a while I just have these massive units fortunately with artillery its only the number of gunners not the number of guns.
Empire and many other old games, if you have happened to notice old games long abandoned suddenly updating again, have received upgraded from sha-1 security encryption. Now, with no legal mods hosted from an approved site and no tools to add the proper security to opened files to close them again, you might get a mod working temporarily, but it will start having problems and fail again come the next security update considering everything is being set to revolving keys regularly updated.
If you dont know, the new system of swapping keys each time you connect/activate a program, is becoming standard and as it is stored inside the TPM, we dont have access to change that with no Assembly Kit
