Make sure you are also trading with major nations.
When playing Prussia take over Austria , Poland , Denmark and United Province (Holland) first then think about expanding outside. This will make you dominant power in central Europe. Also by getting rid of United Province you can take over their outside territories such as New Gunia in South America and Ceylon in the India becuse they will be under rebel control after their capital is taken over. From there you can lay the foundation and expanding your Empire outside of Europe.
Prussia can go for multiple years w/out too much time spent on infantry because their LI is so strong to begin with. Once farms/industry has grown a couple you should be set. In several of my Prussian campaigns I never left Europe until I'd conquered Vienna or even further. That included never even building a ship, let alone a trade ship.
If you can focus on those techs, while still maintaining dominance on the field w/your LI against your neighbors of Austria/Poland/Savoy ect, then just continue down that path until you have what you personally feel is a decent turn by turn economy.
