most people who think fire by rank is better then platoon firing say fire by rank it better because it "it looks cooler" which should never be a decideing factor when trying to pick which one is better
The units that utilize platoon firing best are superior line infantry that Prussia and Sweden have accsess to. you can have 15 of those in your military which they can be the main line infantry in at least 3 armies (5 each) they will 100% win a defensive fire fight and are pretty good on the offensive
Grenadiers should never be put on the front line, unless it is early game and you have fire by rank and the enemy doesn't. late game greandiers are more of a support unit the best way to use them is to put them on your flanks (if you play multiplayer grenadiers work very well on maps with alot of choke points and tight spaces)
