i dont understand the hype around the empire II mod
i genuinely dont really understand what's so hype about it, theres thousands of units but much of those units are conflicting with eachother in terms of roles, and sometimes theres just plain better units for the same cost you can recruit, with zero downsides?

empire total war was not made for thousands of units, it was made for a relatively smaller roster of units which feels entirely overlooked by the creators of this mod

the AI doesnt seem to be much too great either, and the addition of cultures instead of religons makes things needlessly complicated

am i the only one not really liking this mod? it takes up so much space, and im just sitting here wondering "why?"

Navigating the roster list was awful. Dozens of unit cards were squished together in the recruitment menu and organized without any apparent rhyme or reason. I have no idea which is the most effective to use for a current situation. This is overall a small issue but it bothered me enough that I uninstalled the game not long afterwards :(. The new effects were cool...maybe the devs could just release a graphical pack? Obviously a lot of work went into this but it seems to be targeting the smarter history nerds so it's a shame it's presented so sloppily.

@OP: It kinda just sounds like you're jealous you could create as much yourself.

this, there was a lot of times where some units are near or absolutely identical in terms of name and appearance in models, it made recruiting one unit a hassle, especially when some of those units were very close together so it made distinguishing between the two extremely difficult

this is a personal gripe, maybe not one everyone has but i also found it difficult to grasp why light infantry animations always had them laying flat on the ground when they were aiming and firing, it looked much less spectacular than just having them standing and firing, especially when their death animation has them magically shoot up

jealous? jealous of what? empire ii is simply a flawed mod, it just doesnt take into account the limitations of the game and fails to deliver an enjoyable experience in comparison to mods that both take up less space and exceed the enjoyment of empire ii

There was a submod for Empire 2 that gets rid of all of the unit clutter when trying to select units, they had units recruited through buildings and technology, they removed the submod for some reason?

The unit diversity definitely needs to be fleshed out. Too many duplicate units with nonsensical upkeep costs. For instance, you could get 60 range dragoons with no policing bonus, or you could get 120 range with policing bonus for the same upkeep and either identical/slightly varied recruitment costs. The "early" units should reflect their technology/training level when compared to more modernized units.

Also want to say the naval battles are tedious after a few completed. The Fluyt costs 100 upkeep but can go toe-to-toe with a 5th rate trading 10+ broadsides at mid-close range. I forget the upkeep on 5th rates, but it's in the 200s. The armor in general for ships feels way too high (at least early on). Fluyt's are basically frigate merchant ships, they shouldn't be able to withstand 5th rate firepower for more than a few salvos.

I like the mod, but it definitely needs refinement in its upkeep and cleaning up the duplicate units/overwhelming amount of choices from the very beginning. The auto-resolve is god awful in its calculations. I had a full army engage one unit of 90 melee cavalry and those cavalry managed to get 350 kills. I don't want to spend the time fast-forwarding every battle to ensure no or few losses. It really kills my desire to continue my current Swedish campaign. Russian conscripts and medieval style cavalry auto-resolving that poorly is frustrating and a waste of time. Added to that is ~1,500 cost in replenishment or recruitment costs after each... Pretty dumb.

Multiplayer campaign is the biggest thing. if you don't have anyone to play with this its not a big thing. no other mod for empire allows for multiplayer campaign.

Who plays Empire 2 for the unit roster??? The point is the game mechanics, from the complete inaccuracy of the weapons on the field to the overhauled tech tree on the campaign, also the imported animations from Napoleon.

no one plays a mod for its unit roster, but the unit roster in empire ii is so intrusive and not user-friendly that it really hampers the experience, it doesnt really matter if animations or the tech tree is improved if i cant even distinguish one unit from another

I have to agree with the OP. The game is unplayable due to the impossible clutter in the recruitment queue. It wouldn't be so bad - and I would gleefully mod it myself to get rid of the extraneous units but the damn thing can't/won't read the changes. Even RPFM fails to override the original data for units. Its as if they deliberately set out to make it as frustrating as possible.

I'm may try PUA but I have a sneaky feeling that it is going to be the same damn thing.

Probably people just excited to get a more "Accurate" aesthetic to the game. A lot of history nerds like to make these kinds of mods for Total War games. I don't mean it as an insult. But I think there's obviously a reason the developers try to just boil these games down to the purest essence of the period so as to not overwhelm players with superfluous (if interesting) details.

If someone is looking for some mechanically more next-gen than Empire in the context of "Empire 2", they'd probably want to check out Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai or even Napoleon. They greatly expanded and improve upon the gunpowder genre that Empire created
