Thanks, I'd heard about that one before but could never get it to run, so no idea if it's what I'm looking for.
Smaller scale, but Medieval 2 clone.

More modern, but not small scale at all
https://store.steampowered.com/app/333420/Cossacks_3/
More RTS though
I've actually played Company of Heroes before (the first two) and there is a way to play it "small scale" like I was looking for. If you set up a custom battle and give yourself an AI ally against one AI opponent, the AI ally can handle the big fights themself while you can just control one or two squads to support them. That's usually the way I play it. Unfortunately that's only an option in custom battles, there's no campaign that allows you to play this way. I wish there was, that'd be perfect for me.
I tried doing the same thing in Empire Total War's custom battle mode, but unfortunately it always spawns my soldiers miles away from my ally which means I can't really fight effectively alongside them...
CoH3 is the Historical continuation of Total War Historical line maintained by SEGA. Oh, and it is not all trigger scripts either, but sporting its own actual mini AI. I just hope it is not difficult to clear its memory so I can win once in awhile! hahahahahahaha
I had a look but the gameplay in that looks exactly the same as Total War Empire, i.e. you control a whole country/army. Like I said I'd prefer something smaller scale than that.
The COH series is fun but unfortunately in this case it's too modern for what I was looking for. It'd be great to find a COH-style game set in the early-modern era that Total War Empire portrays.
hi..
there is nothing within the time period of empire that allows for control of a smaller contingent within in an army or allowance for your own commanding of a smaller army within a larger fielded army. there is however something before the musket age onward that allows for what you are looking for.. if you are willing to forgo the use of firearms and cannon and step into the age before it.
i would highly recommend:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/261550/Mount__Blade_II_Bannerlord/
this game allows for the player to command themselves alone, or alone within an existing army (mod), smaller raiding party with companions, small scale army (player) fighting under a much larger lord (ai controlled), large army (player) under a lord (ai controlled), or allowance of the player to BE the lord and control multiple armies, territories, regions, ect should they choose. the play style is a little more visceral and requires a more action based style. but there is also a command structure that can be and should be used to help with controlling your units on the battlefield.
you start with yourself, and build your reputation and army from there. there is crafting, world building, and more. quite a lot to offer. and it's great fun. if you haven't already.. maybe do some youtube looks on it.
all the best.
edit: there are some gunpowder age mods under development for this game.. however, they are a work in progress. cheers.
Hi there, thanks for the recommendation. I've heard of that one actually, and yes you're right from a gameplay perspective it does sound like the kind of thing I'm looking for. Unfortunately though the lack of gunpowder weapons is what's keeping me away, I'm just not one of those types who's really interested in pre-firearms military history.
However, you bringing up the 'Mount and Blade' series has reminded me about the game 'Mount and Blade With Fire and Sword', which is set in 17th century Poland. It obviously is a bit earlier than the period portrayed in Empire Total War, however this game still features the kind of small-unit gameplay with early-modern firearms that I was looking for. I might have to see if I can dig out my old copy of it somewhere...
Thanks.
was going to mention that one.. but thought maybe it might be a little old for the look. it is great game.. one of the best. and the dlc (with fire and sword), i hear is equally fitting. there are some "with fire and sword" type mods being worked on for bannerlord. but i believe they are not quite polished yet. maybe? i haven't looked in awhile.
all the best.
Haven't seen anything so far. Most strategy games set around this period only seem to be the type where you control a whole country or a big army.
I'm always a bit hesitant to try mods. Something about downloading files onto my computer that were made by some teenager I've never met just doesn't sit well with me :P
ah.. yes. fair enough.
however, bannerlord as well as warband do have workshop support, so you only need to one click the mod from the workshop page. not to say you are getting a "clean" anything, but usually it's quite easy to read whether or not a mod from workshop is something to worry on, and you can find that out before loading anything.
here is one of the workshop mods that i speak of .. for bannerlord.

and keep in mind.. with fire and sword was a mod before it became dlc.
cheers.
Not exactly what you are looking for, but:

Game was made by the guy who also made Darth Mod for Empire Total War
