Care to elaborate on what you feel or think makes M2TW better than ETW?
would probably help a few others who are compairing the two games.
Maybe explain where ETW lacks in comparison to M2TW etc etc. :)
MTW2 is fun (minus the latest issues with Steam of course), but for a game that relies heavily on melee combat, the pathfinding is still pretty bad. Even after all of the patches, when two forces collide, it isn't where the majority of the troops are involved in the fighting, despite wearing down relatively quickly.
In Empire, the melee system was improved drastically outside of sieges, and even more so with NTW.
The thing that made MTW2 fun were the sieges and night battles.
On the campaign side, it was rather lacking, and you had to deal constantly with small rebel forces popping up, as well as small enemy armies attacking fully fortified positions for no apparent reason. You can edit some of those things, but it's a hassle.
All that said, I'd take Empire and it's improved land battles as well as new sea battles any day over MTW2.
Anybody that's played Imperial Glory (released 2005), knows that the total war series took some of the positive things from their battles and incorporated it into theirs, including the naval aspect. They moved in the correct direction when they did this, IMO.
Everyone was forced to redownload the game a few weeks back, and typically more than once. I've only had two instances where Steam would lockup with a download, and both have come with TW games, including MTW2 and also Rome1. Both were also redownloads where the user wasn't given a choice.
When I say that Steam would lockup, it would also freeze the computer to where I'd have to manually shut it down and restart it. Rome1 turned out to be more of a nightmare, as the automatic redownloads led to me having to uninstall the game via steam and reinstalling it. There were a LOT of ticked off users with MTW2 because many had mods installed that were messed up.
I personally lik E:TW the most, but TW:M2 is a good game. But do not campare them PLEASE! :D lillemingo :D
How I miss the working sieges from Medieval II. Warscape sieges are an insult!
Medieval II had more depth than Empire. There were two types of settlements that could grow, dozens of building slots, more resources, lots of cultures and units, siege equipment, working formation warfare etc.
How can a dumbed down battle system incapable of actual formation warfare, broken fire drills and with a lack of secondary weapon stats be superior?
From the 100% broken AI (both on the strategic and tactical level), to the generally lousy game performance (loading screens, AI turn slowdown), Empire is a mess. The only thing that anyone could possibly say good about it is that it looks good, because it does. Aside from that, the only reason you could possibly like it is if you like to steamroll helpless AI opponents. Maybe that makes you feel good, I don't know.
Before some nerd comes out and tells me this is my OPINION, yes, sure, it is. This opinion, however, is based on simple facts that are easily replicated and verified. E:TW is a poorly optimized game with helplessly bad AI. This is a statement of fact.
