Corrupted Menu Text (Ubuntu 18.04)

Whenever I start the game and it goes to to the menu, the menu text is all corrupted and unreadable. Just a bunch of special characters. I have no idea what I'm clicking on (though I figured out the bottom button is for exiting the game). Any idea how to fix this? A config file somewhere?

It may be the same issue which affects some of the other Total War Linux ports.
Are you using mesa drivers?

Try having a look for the preferences file for Empire in your home folder i.e:

~/.local/share/feral-interactive/Empire

Look for this line in a GUI text editor or with Nano/Vim:

<value name="UsePBOSurfaces" type="integer">0</value>

And change the 1 to 0.

Feral should really fix this or at least inform the mesa devs; it's been a known issue for well over a year.

It's a bit amateurish to have the main menus broken on first launch.
