Any point attacking towns & resources
Fairly new to playing Empire & have to admit its really fun. You can see how much detail this game has compared to later Total War games. I really like how regiments have officers, drummers and standards with proper physics. The naval battle are very cool too.

I would like to know from those who know more, is there any point in attacking towns or resource sites? Or is just making a be-line for the capitol the best thing to do? If so, its a shame that there seems to be few provinces in Europe. 1 province for the whole of France... really?

Glad you're here. Empire is a good game, but it was too ambitious for its time, sadly. Even now, the developers continue to make things sour with the Total War franchise and it's a shame. Though, through all the trouble, it can be fun playing Empire for what it is. I've spent my fair share playing the game. I don't have as many hours played as I should, since I used to play offline a lot.

Attacking towns/farms/resource sites, etc, is something the AI likes to do to annoy the player. Enemy armies that go into these towns will damage the town itself and the region will not gain the resource from that town. Should you do this though? No, it's not beneficial.

Attacking the towns just means that you may have to repair the damage you brought upon the land itself once you've taken the region. That's just wasting money and losing the potential gain from the region you took if you hadn't destroyed the towns.

"Oh, but perhaps we could cause unrest in the region for a spawned rebellion." Don't think too complex. This game really is too simple to grasp that it can be disappointing. Don't worry about complexities in this game, there are none.

So, yes. Attacking the enemies armies and taking the capital of a region is better than destroying the outlying towns.

Yes, it is a shame that the world is huge, but the provinces are small, unfortunately. Again, too ambitious for its time and many bumps in development. A darn shame, indeed. France should be multiple regions. Many regions should be split and divided, but, alas, this is what we've got. It makes the game easy to conquer, but less fun overall.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that was the case. Might be worth it if your in a prolonged war or if taking the capitol could be very costly, then maybe cutting off their resources and causing civil unrest could be worth it. But, yea be-lining the capitol is the best method.

I can see what you mean about the game being ambitious. Having both the Indian and American maps are cool, I also really like the naval fight for dominance of the lucrative trade zones. I had a cool thing where I was on an offensive against the native american tribes. The pirates attacked my port, the naval battle did not go well & I lost my navy. Due to the lack of infrastructure in my colonies, to continue the offensive and deal with the pirates I was forced to raise an army & strong navy in London, then send it to the colonies. Where as in newer Total War games, replacing lost armies and navies is easy & there is little consequence to loosing battles.

Its pointless really, especially if you want to take the region because you'll end up paying the repairs yourself.

The only thing worth destroying is the main trade port since keeping it destroyed (or blockaded) long enough can and will bankrupt the AI.
