And honestly quantity > quality in total war.
Like I really don't care if one of my units is a 33rd Foot, sure they'll last longer but they wont make or break a battle on their own and I wont really notice them in the grand scheme of things.
Which faction are you playing? Different units will be available.
Are you running AUM = Additional Units Mod? More and different units will be available.
Have you purchased any of the DLCs from Steam which give you additional and different units?
Having said all that and telling you my set up is: ETW Vanilla with DarthMod and AUM and all the DLCs which Steam offers for ETW I like these guys:
Organ Guns. They are a multi barreled artillery piece that only the Ottomans have and you get through one of the Steam DLCs. Once zeroed in they are devastating.
Feldjarger zu Pferd. They are Austrian Missile Cavalry with skirmish mode available and an accuracy of 52 at a range of 170! I think I got those with AUM but it has been a while since I set this all up and I am not sure I remember correctly which units came from which source.
With naval units the War Galleons, Heavy Frigates, Privateers and Heavy Privateers. Pretty sure those came with AUM. I like having these with the DarthMod Empire mod because in DME there are no trade ships. Anything that can float placed in a trade port will earn you money. But, you can place a trade fleet in a trade port and let it sit there unmolested for a while. Eventually either someone you are at war with or Pirates will turn up and want to take your trade fleet. And if you’ve a trade fleet of Sloops and Brigs or other light weight units, take that trade fleet they will. So do you recruit a bunch of 3rd rate and up ships to just sit in a trade port? That is a lot of money just sitting there. A good compromise to get a trade fleet that will not be a push over in battle verses having a ton of money just sitting in a trade port is to use the above noted ships. I never build a trade fleet using 100% of these ships but a strong showing of them filled out with lighter weight units.
War Elephants!!!! And War Elephants with Musketeers riding. Another gift from the author of the AUM mod. Available only with the Indian continent countries and no I am not talking about the General officer units that ride elephants in these countries. These are separate and different units. Have these units charge an enemy unit and the bodies start flying and the grief and sorrow of your enemies starts flowing like the ocean. Nothing I’ve seen in the entire ETW game sets enemy units in route faster or more thoroughly. If you recruit these units use them! If you get occupied with other areas of a battle and just leave these units standing around, enemy infantry units will stand off and pot shot them till they are all down or run off. They are melee units not stand off units.
And Heavy Cavalry in general. Talking horses here not elephants. Again I think with AUM, most countries have one or two different varieties of Heavy Cavalry. I use cavalry a lot. I field armies with 4 to 6 cavalry units. Yeoman level cav. units and even the regular cav. units that come with ETW Vanilla are OK but they just don’t have the charge, defense, melee and morale numbers that come with Heavy Cav. Heavy Cav. can bring about so much more chaos and havoc.
You asked for 5 but I’ve got an honorable mention choice to toss out and that would be the Dehomey Amazons. They come with one of the Steam DLCs and are available to recruit when playing some of the Eastern countries. I think I like them mainly because they are the only unit in the ETW game that is made up of females. I don’t know why, I just like’em. They are a line infantry unit which happens to have a longer range than standard infantry. So, I have them form up out of range of enemy units and put them to work.
NOTE: Don’t recall right now if any of the units I mention are available from the start but I do remember that some you need to develop into your military technology research streams a ways before they become available.
Line infantry.
Well thank you for your answer and to clear it up a bit I play COMPLETELY vanilla atm, and I asked for top five and please make them land???
