How to capture Malta?

The island is too small to unload troops, and if there are enemy units in the port you can't move into their port to unload units. So how is it possible to attack the island of Malta? I ran into this issue before and had to give up.

Take one ship and block the port. On the same turn have another ship carrying soldiers drop said units off on the island. Then, assuming your transport fleet isn't a match for the Maltese navy, either burn your ships, or get them to safety.

I am a little confused. I CAN'T drop my troops on the island, this is the problem in the first place. Not enough room...

Ok finally got it to work, though a bit tideous. So I guess there is a mechanic that makes it easier if you blockade a port...

The mechanic is that you cannot capture a beachhead in an area contested by an enemy fleet. When you blockade the port, you contain the fleet, and are allowed to disembark.

Of course, better A.I. would have intercepted the blockading force, and made you fight for it.

Yes but then your troops would magically teleport off the island once you declared war. The only way is the two-fleet method mentioned above (one to supress the Maltese fleet presumably sitting it port and the second to actually carry your land force).

If you declare war by attacking their city, it won't throw you off.

You'll get hit with a diplomatic penalty though for abusing treaties.

True, but I seem to always get such a penalty even when I do nothing different than the AI.
