There are some further nuances to this strategy- and sometimes the random terrain leaves you no place to deploy your artillery properly.
Late in the game you get sharpnel, which is essentially long range cannister. Howitzers get near-useless explosive shells instead of cannister and shrapnel- and their high trajectory and short range makes their roundshot pretty useless too. Howitzers are completely pointless until you get percussion fuzes, at which point they're just mostly useless.
