Mod manager refuses to work at all
all it does is start then it whines about exceptions that it can't be bothered to lable and show empty mod lists.

That sounds very frustrating! I've not been able to get a mod manager to work for Empire either. I have been using mods for Empire for several years.

A mod manager isn't the only way to make mods work for Empire (of course, in your experience and mine, a mod manager isn't a way to do this!). There are two other ways to activate mods, they are explained in a post here: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?696782-Saving-pack-in-movie-mode-mod-units-are-in-game-saving-in-mod-mode-does-not-put-units-in-game&p=14661395&viewfull=1#post14661395

That post says that the current version of Pack File Manager is in the modding workshop for Attila. However, now the current version of PFM is in the modding workshop for Three Kingdoms, here: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?796914-PFM-5-2-Three-Kingdoms-Support.

Which mod(s) are you trying to use? In my experience, larger ETW mods (with launchers) usually create a user script file for you, or include instructions on how to do this. Smaller ETW mods are often 'movie' type files, which means that they don't need a mod manager or user script file to activate, they work automatically.

twcenter has been less then helpful. I have been trying, in vain, for years to get mods to work. No matter what some sort of error occurs. Only darthmod works, I want to get the american revolution mod to work, but even with its own launcher it just crashes at launch. Is it so much to ask that something work?
Alwyn Jun 30, 2019 @ 1:29am
I'm sorry to hear that. No, it's not too much to ask that something work.

I wonder if you're using a Mac (mods made on PCs often don't work on Macs) or if your Steam or copy of the game are installed in non-standard locations (some mods, such as Empire Total Factions, only work if the game is installed in the default location).

Have you reported the problems with starting The American Revolution to the mod creator on their forum on Total War Center (if not, do you want to)? You mentioned trying a mod manager before, were you trying to use a mod manager to make The American Revolution work? The FAQs now say that we shouldn't do that: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?798052-The-American-Revolution-Mod-v3-Tenth-Anniversary-Edition-Questions-and-Answers&p=15804274&viewfull=1#post15804274.

There's a new version of The American Revolution coming out on July 4, so you could try the new version (if you do, don't forget to uninstall the old version first. I'd suggest installing a clean copy of Empire, playing a few turns of the Grand Campaign before installing any mods and then installing The American Revolution). Obviously, you could report problems to the mod creator, as he's active at the moment.

Good luck!

nope, pc. Several pcs and laptops, I use default locations, the forums are abandoned and filled with dead links, I used the mods own launcher, the mod manager was just to see if i could make my own mods but the tools for that are utterly broken

I was thinking of wiping empire from my computer entirely for a fresh install yes

Darthmod is an okay mod but he really just slaps other peoples mods in a mod pack and I don't like them all

It's true that a lot of ETW modders have moved on during the 10 years since Empire was released.

When I had difficulty installing another mod (Imperial Splendour), I contacted the modders using their forum on Total War Center. They solved the problem. A modder who's working on The American Revolution was answering questions today - https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?798052-The-American-Revolution-Mod-v3-Tenth-Anniversary-Edition-Questions-and-Answers&p=15806100&viewfull=1#post15806100. So I suggest asking for help in The American Revolution forum., or waiting until July 4 when the new version is released and trying that (and asking for help on their mod forum if you need it).

I know what you mean about DarthMod combining different mods and liking some but not others. I wonder if you're like to try a mod which makes fewer changes, such as Empire Total Factions, and adding smaller mods (either ones which are available, or ones you make) to customise your game-play? Empire Total Factions plus Swiss Halberdier's Additional Units Mod plus Bran Mac Born's Empire CAI Mod should lead to a pretty good experience, for example. Here are links to them:

Empire Total Factions: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?350349-EMPIRE-TOTAL-FACTIONS-(Last-updated-17-08-2011)&p=7156990&viewfull=1#post7156990
You can play as the Thirteen Colonies or as the United States in the Grand Campaign with this mod. Some users with Windows 8 and 10 reported problems with installing this, the solution is explained here: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?350349-EMPIRE-TOTAL-FACTIONS-(Last-updated-17-08-2011)&p=14937534&viewfull=1#post14937534

Additional Units Mod: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?250655-Additional-Units-Mod-Empire-(AUM-EMP)-3-7-updated-14-3-18

If you decide to use the AUM, don't forget to use the UPC too: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?340442-Unit-Pack-Compatibility-Languages-Project-Empire-(UPC-EMP)-updated-30-3-18

Bran's Empire CAI: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?597416-Bran-s-Empire-Campaign-AI&p=12769987&viewfull=1#post12769987 is the version I prefer, to minimise the risk of the Ottoman turn bug; other versions are available

Other smaller mods are available, for example if you find sieges repetitive or laggy then I recommend Shokh Hates Sieges: https://www.twcenter.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=4159

Good luck, I hope you can find a mod/combination of mods which work for you and which you enjoy.

I'd honestly rather just have better audio, can't get that to work either, and if possible make my own mod fixing the reload speed stupidity that ca is obsessed with. I did that in shogun and it worked wonders, but of course they really half assed empire so doing anything with it is a nightmare. I'll try waiting for the new tar but after this I think I am just going to give up on this game. At the rate I'm going it would be easier to just turn shogun 2 into empire.

Tar is working, sort of. During the intro cinematic, the motherboard is cut off from the power supply. It is happening consistantly, I'll be watching the cinematic and suddenly poof, no power to the board.
natknut Jun 30, 2019 @ 6:07pm
and now empire has magically vanished from my computer.
There are workshop tool for modding in a game name Titan Quest and player dont need to install mod by themselves just one click and hundreds of mods are in there for them to choose it they even have a page in steam i think it should happen for total war .

A lot of older mods have been mad unworkable by Steams updates. I'm currently playing vanilla ETW because Darth is the only mod i can still get to work.

I did finally get it to start, but now it is cutting the power to my computer, and steam no longer recognizes empire as installed, which it still is.

Assuming you don't get the fatal issue I had, all you have to do is completely remove all empire files from your computer, then reinstall the game and the mod
