How to play as Portugal

So I'm new to this game, and I would like to play as Portugal but I don't know how, do I unlock it or do I need a mod for it?

You need mod. You are not able to unlock Portugal in normal game.

Yes, I think the mod in question is called "All Factions Playable v.2.0" and can be found and downloaded from twcenter.

Playing Portugal was really fun. Especially since you start with a colony in Goa (India) and can start expanding before the others, while still being a "minor" faction.

In my other campaigns Portugal always gets conquered by Spain within the first 15 years lol.

You can do it using ESF Editor. There's a video floating around explaining the exact details but basically you open up the main ESF file, and change three values from, "false" to, "true" and then finally you have to boot up a campaign and quickly capture or buy Portugal's regions so that when you unlock the faction their regions aren't covered by the fog of war. I've actually made Portugal playable myself and given them some unique units, including Tiradores.
