Any way to be the thirteen colonies in grand campaign??
I looked for it, I don't see anything.

I have downloaded a thirteen colonies mod which allows me to be the thirteen colonies but I do not know how to activate it.

This will be much more than you actually are asking for... Empire Total Factions... Easily searched. Install as admin, run the launcher and select from the options of time period and even all the factions. I want to say 12 different mods all in one through the launcher, but I would have to go count to be sure.

When you decide you want more unit variety, also add the additional units mod. These are the only two Empire mods I run.

Empire Total Factions (ETF) with the Additional Units Mod (AUM) would be a good option. I have tried both and they are really impressive mods.

You might also want to consider These United Colonies: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?682629-These-United-Colonies-v1-11-with-Georgia-Horse-Rangers-schooners-and-extra-mods-in-second-post-April-19-2015. This mod is far less advanced than ETF and AUM. It is designed to allow players to play as the Thirteen Colonies, have a revolution and play as a republic (still called the Thirteen Colonies) under the flag of the United States. You would have access to many of the units in the US roster such as Minutemen, Rangers and Long Rifle Men (sadly, you would not have access to the DLC units such as the USS Constitution).

You wrote that you have downloaded a mod and do not know how to activate it. Does the mod come with installation instructions? If so, have you checked that you have followed them exactly (I'm a fairly experienced user of mods and I sometimes make mistakes when installing them)? Did you download zipped files and, if so, have you unzipped them? There is a link in this post: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?691495-Links-to-basic-how-to-guides-for-new-modders to instructions on 'how to activate mods for Empire Total War' - see the link under the heading 'Other editing/modding' to 'how to activate mods'.

That is why I like Total Factions. You have access to everything you own plus everything the mod allows. You can play as 13 colonies in a late game or early game or you can click emergent on the launcher and select play as the US.

That's true, ETF offers an incredible range of options. I enjoy playing minor and emergent factions such as the United States and Ireland using ETF. I had a lot of fun using ETF and reporting on an Ireland campaign; here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?668990-%C9ir%ED-Amach-Irish-Rising-(Ireland-AAR)-updated-February-22-2015 and a Venice campaign, here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?660374-The-Lion-and-the-Eagle-(Venice-AAR).

It does have installation instructions, but it's pretty confusing for me, since I just bought ETW.

It tells me to put "startpos.esf." and "scripting.lua" in the campaign directory, and i put it in the folder "campaigns" and the faction did not show up in grand campaign.

I don't know if i put it in the wrong folder or something.

Did you unzip the files? They were zipped with the free software 7zip which you can find with an online search.
You wrote that you might have put them in the wrong folder. The right folder is: C:/ProgramFiles(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Empire Total War/data/campaigns/main. If you put it in data/campaigns, it won't work - it needs to be in campaigns/main. (You need to remove the vanilla, unmodifed startpos.esf and scripting.lua first, for example by creating a sub-directory of data/campaigns/main called something like 'vanilla files'.)

Darthmod empire allows you to play as any faction as well I believe.
