Wars of succession started when a monarch died and his heir got on the throne BUT at the same time, a different monarch felt he had the right to that throne.
This was possible because monarchies across Europe have different bloodlines; Hapsburg Spain and Hapsburg Austria but also Bourbon Spain and Bourbon France. These were the largest families during that period, with legacies in different countries.
The most famous war of succession is the Spanish War of Succession that started after Charles V died in 1700 ( http://www.spanishwars.net/18th-century-war-of-the-spanish-succession.html )
