What is the best way to attack forts?
So whenever I attack a city and it has fortifications I always seem not confident enough and usually end up autoresolving most of them. Does anyone have good tips for attacking forts? Both star forts and regular fortifications

2 howitzers supported by 3 or so regiments of line infantry or 4-6 half size units are to make their way to the corner of the enemy fort. The rest of your army is to hang back behind the aforementioned units. The AI ought to try cramming virtually every available unit into that corner of the fort where you're attacking. This mass of meat is very very vulnerable to quicklime. From there, you ought to be able to wipe out up to 90% of all enemy units just by shelling that corner with quicklime.

blow holes in each side of the wall with arty. army will be unevenly placed, so you can send infantry and some cav to deal head on with the largest enemy mass, while having infantry flank in the other hole and take shots at them from behind. while the enemy is distracted, have infantry defend the flag in square formation. that's my strategy.

hope this helps.

Set battle timer to no limit so you can take all the time you need to plan and execute! Save game before you go to battle so you can learn from your mistakes and redo the battle till you can come up with a plan you are comfortable with and therefore, experience to take on your next fort! All forts have one or more blind spots, find those and utilize them in your plan, with battle timer set to no limit, you have all the time you need to see what the enemy is going to do when you shift your own armies around!

I climb the walls. I have not noticed much damage to my units when I do this. I give each unit a section of wall and hit the walls all at once.

my army is usually set with 12 line infantry, 6 cavs, 2 arty. Set the lines in 2 columns and ask them run fast to the fort ( right and left to the gate). Set the first 5 units of each column to climb the walls with bayonets and the last unit to cover them with fire. use artys to fire the wall till infantry arrive on it. Use cavs to attack enemy units that try to exit the fort to attack your infantry from behind.

The first possible moment you could hope to get mortars is around 1735-1740 depending on how quickly you develop your technologies. Percussion shells, take another 30-35 years to research due to being the last artillery technology.

I think you need tier 3 or 4 in artillery building.

Do u know when I get howitzers?

I don't know when you will get howitzers, since getting howitzers is dependant on your technology path. if you only research infantry then it can take a long while to get howitzers.

You can right click on each technology and the unlockable buildings to see what it gives.
Alright thanks!

Regardless of if you only have cannons you should be able to breach the walls at one or more locations (prefer 2 or more locations), even if you damage the walls by 50% it destroys most of the gun emplacements. Are you using demi-cannons or 12 pounders? Also have you achieved anything beyond solid shot yet? Personally I bring 4 to 5 cannons plus infantry, one or 2 cav for quick reaction reserves into the fray with extended battle time clock, can't lose..

The gun emplacements aren't worth worrying about at all.

I've found that a breach in the walls causes a bottleneck that can be very costly, that is why I went with going right over the top of the walls with all units set at melee. If the enemy have a large force, then I just besiege them until they are forced to come out and fight me.
