Maybe this one post, but its something everyone takes for granted
I have heard Monster Hunter is what inspired the Dark Souls gameplay/"genre" to begin with.
When I gave Monster Hunter World an attempt I absolutely
DETESTED
It’s gameplay/combat style. It feels so clunky and unresponsive as heck.
It’s not the "mon hun" genre itself, because I love God Eater- a game with actually good controls.
If this is how all games in the "souls" genre play, I really don’t want to be part of it at all.
...and yet, I actually really dig this game’s gameplay/combat. I don’t know how it is even remotely similar to Souls. Maybe I don’t fully understand what this label actually means but It really doesn’t seem like it is to me.
Hmm.. maybe the difference is, this is more shooting focused? There is melee, but it's not the main focus. That may be a reason...
I'd argue Monster Hunter World has much tighter controls than any of the God Eater games. It's just that Souls/Monster Hunter combat doesn't allow for much animation cancelling like a whole lot of other action games. This can easily easily be misunderstood as unresponsive controls, while in actuality it is there to punish players for button mashing.
Exactly (one) of my points. I hate that to no end.
If I press the button to dodge, then I want my character to respond to my command ASAP.
Not to stand there and be stuck on an overly-long animation and get hit anyway- despite the fact I reacted to it by pressing button to dodge WAY before the enemy attack connected.
I simply can’t stand this. It’s not fun and is insanely frustrating.
I reacted to the action on-screen on time, so I honestly don’t see it as my fault.
Punish me when the enemy manages to get hits on me because I failed to react in time to their attacks all you want- NOT because my character takes ages to respond to what I tell them to do!
Like, I can understand it to a certain degree if say the character in question is welding a giant heavy sword or something- but it seems like EVERY weapon and even the general movement felt like that in that game.
Nope, sorry. I gave it an honesty try, good graphics, I liked the open maps the monsters etc but the gameplay itself...completely brought it down for me. Uninstalled and never looked back. Honestly it just made me want to play God Eater again xD.
I don’t really understand what this actually means, but I definitely enjoy it’s gameplay flow A LOT more than Monster Hunter so if that is "weightless"gameplay then count me in.
Really, the fact that so many people told me to play Monster Hunter while completely downplaying God Eater with comments such as "Hey if you like GE, you will LOVE Monster Hunter, it’s better in every way!" as if it was FACT it’s the better game don’t really help it’s case.
I am glad it created the genre and I fully appreciate that, but man. I legit enjoy GE so much more it’s not even a fair fight.
There is really nothing wrong with either style, but I wish someone told me of how utterly different they really are. They are polar oppositives.
So anyway this game to me feels less souls/monster hunter and more of the classic action game I would say. Yeah I suppose the melee is a bit clunky/slow like but you know? That is alright, probably because that’s not the entire gameplay! as a seconday element, it’s fine. That just may be the key difference?
This is exactly how I feel too. I like both as GE and MH as well, but completing a hunt in MH just feels so much more satisfying.
