For anyone interested in dev details, for improved performance things like sulfur mines are hidden once they're out of range and then moved, reset and made visible again when a 'new' mine appears. With this bug the sulfur chunks were remembering their old position instead of being properly reset, so those empty mines actually did have sulfur - it was just being shown miles behind you :/
