Your entire rant about the game is completely subjective, not just the one paragraph.
1.) The game is meant to be played with a joystick. I couldn't imagine playing this game with mouse and keyboard.
2.) You can still easily join games and leave games. I actually think it's a good thing that they separated team lobbies and solo lobbies. The team games are extremely frustrating if you happen to get a player or two on your team who don't know how to play. It would be really annoying to join a team tourney and get destroyed for 3 rounds because of incompetent teammates. People won't want to play again.
3.) As far as the weapon options go, I play with the default settings like in Knight Squad 1. I don't see the options as "gimmicky" - I think it's great to have some options to be able to change your game up a bit.
4.) The content unlocking system works well in the way that it sort of serves as an unofficial tutorial. If you're having trouble unlocking maps or getting kills, lower the difficulty of the bots. The game is a breeze on easy and medium is becoming easier as well. I'm thinking about switching my bots to hard soon.
5.) I don't see anything wrong with the colors. At first, I didn't think I would like the 3D sprites, but they have grown on me. The game looks good and everything moves fast. I haven't seen any slow frames or lagging.
6.) Knight Squad 1 also had online multiplayer so this point is not factually correct.
7.) If you feel as though the old game modes are now "clunky," you can play the old game modes just like they were in the original game. It's not that difficult to set up to play the game like Knight Squad 1 was played.
8.) Once again, the unlocking system is similar to the original game's unlocking system with a few enhancements. I have already unlocked a handful of knights with minimal effort so it's not too difficult. The way the maps unlock serves as an unofficial tutorial. This prevents people who don't know how to play from going into online games and frustrating other players.
It seems as though you just don't like the game.
I agree that it makes you try stuff you might not know or normally try. The devs also said an update might come and they specified update over paid DLC.
There are a ton of configuration options available, which is nice as I plan to play this in couch co-op. Alone the option to set the starting weapon (even an upgraded version of it) will keep us entertained for many hours as it changes the gameplay a lot. A few of the gamemodes seem to be less fun than the others, but that's again a matter of taste and I'm impressed how many there are available.
