There is no reason to travel back in the afterlives. You don't get stuff from fighting them. You only get stuff from beating them and once you do that once there is no reason to beat them again. So you only go forward through afterlives.

I think the reason why you can't go back to earlier bosses is due to the fact that you still get coins if you do damage to them.

I assume the bosses will recycle after the final unique one is reached.

You don't get coins if you damage them. You get coins every minute from your minions. Damage is a separate ability of minions.
