It's fairly simple, you just have to own:
three level 1 heroes for them to combine into level 2
or
three level 2 heroes for them to combine into level 3
Lets do an example:
You have a level 1 Axe and a level 1 Tusk on your board
Next round, you find an Axe and you put him onto your bench so now you have two level 1 Axes, the round after you find another Axe, so you buy him again and since you own 3 level 1 Axes (they can be spread out, one can be in the field and two on the bench) they will now upgrade into level 2 Axe
Always keep gold above 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 until matches start for the most interest when not re-rolling.
Don't get more of every 2 star unit you have. You have to focus on only a couple low tier units first. If you go for every unit at once, you end up needing to toss some of them to fit enough in the bar. Tossing your units trashes you team since you are removing those from the unit pool, and you wont roll them again as frequently.
If you win or lose a match fast enough and have a lot of gold stored, you can put units on the board after the match, but before the store units change and add more from the store to the bar than you can keep during a match. Then you can roll quickly before the next match starts and hope to get some upgrades before the match, so you don't have excess units on the board when the match starts.
Finally check what opponents have and go for something different to have a good chance at *** heroes.
Some of this may cause you to lose a lot early on if you don't get lucky rolls, but you can get losing streak gold and usually come back in the end pretty well.
It don't matter if they are on the field or on the bench.
One thing that can help you is you can lock the shop offerings by clicking the padlock (really useful if your offered multiple heroes you want or 3 of the same but cant afford them all).
The other thing is use the reroll button if you got spare cash (dont spend to much on it though unless your above 50 coins).
