Report a translation problem
1. Most builds that were good before the update, are still at least decent after the update.
2. There is not one specific way to win the game.
To get to first place, you need some luck and you'll have to avoid as many mistakes as you possibly can.

I can't see how much you played, but if you're still new to the game, we have some beginner guides, that might help you with your quest to get to first place.
Besides that, check your money and plan a few rounds ahead, so you know when you're going to buy down for a level upgrade or when you have to reroll a lot. For the latter case, consider what units you could reasonably upgrade and whether it's worth the potential loss of income (interest).
Also, don't hold onto too many units. Buy those you can upgrade to two stars, and then the one or two you could potentially three-star. Everything else is wasted space and could potentially allow another reroll if made liquid.
I feel like if you're usually hitting top two or three as you say, then just keep playing and try to learn from your mistakes. You'll be getting some 1st places finishes soon enough if you're consistently placing high.
