Pirates Outlaws is similar enough to Slay the Spire that it feels instantly familiar to me. Same simple gameplay but - based on very early impressions - lots of incrementally impactful choices and lots of variety and depth.
It is different enough that it offers something fresh. Theme, visuals and also mechanics. I am unsure yet whether it will have the same highly finessed design and balance that Slay the Spire has, but it seems capable.
I am yet to experience it but the extended variety of characters, and the quests, are two features that go beyond anything Slay the Spire had.
Having tried multiple Slay the Spire likes in the search of something similar but new, this is the first that has struck me as potentially equal or even . . . better in some ways.
Depends on what do you mean by 'exciting'.
Gamebreaking combos exist - but are not entirely gamebreaking.
Sword Master w/ 2 x Payment in Blood, a Locket (from her unique quest) and some heavy hitting melee cards is wrecking bosses and usual enemies alike. But she still have some difficulties with some bosses (like dawg master from Arena or those pesky healing banning... skeleton mommies, I guess?). Enjoyable. But still demands thinking, ALOT.
Gunner (starting character) w/ Powder Bag and Magic Missiles. Can wipe stuff all day. Still have some difficulties (ghosts, piercing vikings, etc). But still fun and still demands thinking. Alot.
Cursed Captain (one with mutations). With some luck, can just STAND AND DESTROY. Can plow through most events and utilize sickest cards possible just fine while the rest of the roster can't afford doing so. Still have some problems (*beep*ing Piranha event...) - but still fun! And still demands thinking, quite alot.
Can't say that grind is exceptionally slow. I was simply doing quests - and got to 9999 rep with only 1 (one) small quest-less downtime.
Try reaching Arena lvl 30 when you're not in the mood for questing, ignore Tavern until you REALLY have nothing else to do - and believe me, there will be no room for boredom.
And I appreciate the reply, thanks!
I may eventually return to the game since there aren't that many good deck-building games.
