How do you increase physical armor?

I've been playing for a while and got to the boss with the 5 floating swords that you find after going through the dark sphere. But I take so much damage from that guy that all my heals are used up and I die in less than 5 minutes. I see a "Physical Armor" attribute in my character page but I couldn't figure out how it works. It's stuck at 3. I have some Sigil of Protection but I don't want to waste it without knowing more about how armor works.
Basically, how do I increase my armor?

How many Essence did you use last time you tried leveling it up?
It gradually needs more and more resources to increase a stat.

So is it ties to the Strength attribute? Is there any other way to increase it? Maybe equiping some armor or something?

It is tied to the stamina stat. Every time you increase a stat, it now shows a green text for the increase. It will likely say 3 originally then 3(in green) when you increase stamina.

One boss gave me particular trouble till I figured out the timing. Was the reason I wanted to increase the physical armor. Oh well, I did eventually beat his ass.
