I agree that it is much smother to grow population now.
I play only medium sized maps on arid highlands so my numbers are not competitive.
Remember that just cause you got the item on your inventory, it doesn't mean people are getting it when they need it.
Distribution is a very important thing once you start having a big city.
Im currently at 3119 in year 95, with a growth rate of 54 per year (70 born/immigration and 16 deaths).
Its a big map, so there is room or expansion, allthough it started struggling when i passed 2600pop.

But at the year 140, pop was 1978,
Growth 31 and decline is about the same.
housing is 1978/2608, so that should be more than enough empty housing.
lol
Last night after posting here i went to play for some time ... something really weird happened. Suddenly the game went into "oh so you like your big population hun?" and basically threw a pandemic (i estimate over 500 sick, i can only manage about 120 sick at the same time, so 68 died). While i was managing to bring those sick numbers down ... a huge freezing storm, 91 dead to exposure. Add in natural causese, and in total that took out 182 (i was at ~3300 by then, falled back to ~3120) ... but i managed.
Did i mention i had all markers at 100%, and i average 300 medicine, 600 soap (12 markets stocked with 4 workers), and 2000 firewood? Never had an epidemic or major exposure issues before.
Oh but thats not all ... right after that, it sent a 800 soldiers attack with 4 catapults and 4 ramming carts on 3 different flanks. Of course losing 182 citizens took a toll on my defenses ... so yeah, so the game just said FU, go to bed.
Lets say i had to load an autosave before started today...
2 years later and i'm barely getting back to 3300.
