Deer in fully fenced fields
Since the last update, I have deer in fully fenced and gated fields. They are literally eating half the crop every single rotation! I've placed hunters right by the fields. Flagged them to kill the deer. Every rotation the monster munchers are back.

There is no spawn point in the field, and none that the radius reaches (not that that should matter with the fence/gate in place.

I normally play with a 500 population limit and I'm having to build SIX 12x24 fields for food in addition to 3 orchards, keep 4-5 hunters, an upgraded cattle and goat barns, etc. just to keep these villagers fed.

I've never had this issue before! Even a field that had a deer spawn in it, that spawn disappeared once the field was fenced and gated. I can't maintain the work/soldiers/laborers with this amount of fields (I have 12 farmers per field, as low as I can set it and not have crops left to rot), but that is 72 farmers plus the ones for the hay field for the barns.

I've checked the files, reinstalled, and everything is good ... but the deer flat out won't stay out of crop fields. I'm not talking one or two either. I've got anywhere from 5-12 deer appearing every summer after killing them off one by one via the hunters the year before!

Sure there's not a gap in the fence anywhere?

Absolutely positive. I've used both wood and stone fences (wish there was a matching gate for the stone lol), and cleared all trees from outside of the fields. Definitely no gaps. I've started 3 games since the last update and every one of them has had the same issue. I'm about to try running a second fence around the fields. During this game I actually added 5 hunters with 4 on the outside and one on the inside and still can't get rid of the deer. I do have over 2000 hides in storage ~ but no one can eat those.

Send a hunter in there. It may have got in before the fencing was complete
They can spawn over walls, its happened to me many times if you try and fence them in, expanding the fencing area or killing them off was the only solution.
I don't think the gates are working anymore. I've had many farm animals go rogue and leave their penned in areas through the gates. Might be the deer have figure out how to exploit them too, though I've never had this specific problem.

That's not a bug. If you want to keep farm animals enclosed you need to put their buildings inside the fencing as well, not attach the fencing to the buildings.

They aren't going through the gates of the barns. They're going out through the gates in the walls for humans to go into the grazing areas. The placement of the barns has nothing to do with them going rogue and running through them... and actually, they don't need to be rogue to go through them. I've had them just roam out naturally, just shows up more when they go rogue. The gates simply aren't working to stop animals.

If you even look at the gates, you can see that they're always open. They used to be closed and only open when a villager went through, then close behind them. I don't think I've seen a closed gate since the 9.3 patch, though I didn't play a map in 9.2.
It does. If you enclose the buildings inside the fencing then they won't wander. At least mine haven't. I put my animals far away from any fields as well.
I have never seen a closed gate. Not from day 1 of EA. The only gates that close are the big ones that lead into town.

I occasionally get a deer in one of my fields that just spawned in it. I have a deer icon over one of my barns in my current game.

Might be why you're not seeing it. I have farms with the barns completely enclosed within the fencing, but I do have roads running through them, which is why I have gates in the fencing. The animals go through those. I did that in previous games before v9.1 and didn't have any issues with it. It just started happening when I upgraded to 9.3.

I'm pretty sure I used to see the fencing gates open and close when villagers walked through them. Always kind of thought that was a cool feature, but I could be mistaken. I never had issues with animals wandering outside their fenced in areas though until 9.3, and I haven't really changed my designs.
I had a similar problem. Although I still could not eradicate all the does, I manage to lower the number of new sprawns by removing all the nearby trees. I used to have an orchard field next to the farms.

You can manually hunt the deer using hunters, cover the place with road or farmland, eventually the breeding ground will move to more empty spaces or sometimes just disappear.
I came to the forum to check if anyone else had the same issue. There's a lot more deer spawn since the new release so where the fertile soil is, I have like 3 deer herd plus a pig herd. And they enter through the gates and closing the gates are not an option.
