Instead of trying to get creative with controlling my troops, I just used the Offensive Stance and controlling All Troops and was able to take out the four Raider Camps surrounding my town - one had been there just over 50 years.
I used six Archers and six Light Infantry - all geared; no one missing any gear. The Archers behaved properly as well; standing at a distance as they should.
I guess the moral of the story is, don't get fancy, just control everyone on/in Offensive Stance.
Hope this Helps! :)
But what are you strugling with exactly??
I just move them like I always do, with the flag from the barrack. While I did tried the new ''combat controls'' I didn't saw any benefit from it, so I went back to the barrack's flag.
I only had to change 2 things about my army,
1.- Do not recruit archers: infantry is way better, and you have towers, town center, and hunters to be your archers. Also, infantry DOES shoot from the barracks if they are garrinosed and an enemey is nearby.
2.- Be way more cautious with the speed I let my town grow, and the moment I upgrade to a new tier, since combat is actually challenging now, you want to be ready for bigger raider groups (as your town grow), and better equiped raider groups (as you level up your town). And obviously, have more defenses/troops than I was used to.
Defensive stance - My army stands exactly where they are. They don't move, they don't return fire even when directly attacked. They do absolutely nothing as their health bar drops and they die.
Offensive stance - My armies rush into hand-to-hand battle (which is probably intended), except that my archers will not stand back and fire from a distance. They run right right up to the enemy and start firing at point blank range.
Rally stance - I don't know... I used it once or twice and it didn't seem to do anything.
Manual control - I used to set my barracks flag in the general location that I want to engage the raiders and then mostly let the game control the battle, while manually directing certain troops to attack specific targets when needed. This is no longer working. My troops seem to prioritize rallying to the flag over fighting. Even to the point of standing under the flag and doing nothing, or running through raiders without attacking to get to the flag, while still taking damage.
Example of the challenges: Raiders are attacking my wall. I place my archers on the other side of the wall from the raiders so they can fire arrows at the raiders while fully protected by the walls. My archers will fire 1 to 2 shots into the raiders and then immediately try to rush to the other side of the walls and into the middle of the raiders where they get killed. I am CONSTANTLY trying to pull my archers back from hand-to-hand, which just leads to little settlement defence and a lot of death.
All I am saying is that the developer needs to create a guide that explains the mechanics of each battle stance and how best to utilize them with each troop type. If this guide already exists. Where can I find it?
Also, be careful with the Defensive Stance option, don't tell troops in Defensive Stance to go after fleeing enemies, I had my Infantry go AWOL for several months as I explained in another post Here:
