yep. even more - when you relocate garrisons or towers - guards or soldiers will go and get new equipment. same thing when you dismiss guards or soldiers.
it is 100% wrong , and hope devs will fix that asap.

When you fire solidiers/guards or relocate their buildings, they people turn in their weapons and armor. Once it is relocated, typically new people are assigned, and they go fetch the arms from storage.

Only when killed in combat.

Dying after the battle to an illness, does that count as "die in combat"?

true, checked that - equipment goes back to goods list in R window, ty for explanation. was strange to see people seeking equipment after relocating
I think when a villager dies, its current inventory is lost. Regardless of the cause of death.
So a soldier would lose all its weapons and armor, even if dying from the flue.

Correction: after playing some more it looks like the inventory is only lost when death is due to combat (animal or bandit).

Can you fire a person just before he dies to get back his equipment?

Don't think so. Just had a soldier die to festering wounds and his armor dropped on the ground.
Yes,which is weird

You are correct. I waited till a soldier died of illness and his inventory was indeed dropped on the ground to be reused.
