Why a late harvest when the farm is close to home? I made it 5x5 and I have 1 farm.

If you mean you have one farmer then that's one short. 5x5 needs 2.

Drunken farmers, sick farmers, farmers deciding to stock their home just at harvest time, farmers that got exchanged manually and have to walk from somewhere far away, farmers fetching equipment that got used up just at the wrong moment, basically anything that throws a wrench into your carefully balanced machine. Same can happen with traders when they both decide to do whatever, instead of refilling the trade post, just when the merchants are here and waiting on a timer.
