1000 population is max
After playing my first round in the easiest difficulty setting for about 30 hours (about 60 in-game years) I reached 1000 population without any issues.

Looks like I reached the roof already. I got housing for 1095 people but the numbers hasn't increased above 1000 for the last 10 years.

I REALLY hope this wont be the case in coming updates, I was just getting started! So much land to settle!

Hm, there is no population cap.

I think my max was around 1200 before we had a new test build and I had to start all over. (this is from pre early access internal tests. We don't plan on wiping your towns!)

Strange! As I said, I let the game go on for about 10 in-game years with it never go over 1000. The way from 700 to 1000 was very fast. There is no apparent reason for the population not going over 1000.
Tell me if I can do anything to help with a trouble shooting for development/bug search

New game with latest update. Still the population caps at 1000. Anyone else with this problem?

But.....the fps must be yelling in pain at those numbers and houses...im on a VERY beefy PC with a 3080ti and watercooled everything, at 500 people im down at 20-30fps and i stop playing. I even turned shadows to low, AA off and still it wont improve.

I cant imagine this game at 1000 people walking around, unless you have a NASA computer you are running this game at 10fps at that point

Yes I maxed out at 1000 in my first game and made a similar thread about a week ago or so. One the devs came in and said there was a soft cap of 1000.

I have a 18 month old solid middle of gaming computer and my game runs fine at 1000. I think the soft cap might be for testing before they can see how much will bog down computers, rather test first without folks bogging down computers.

As you can read above a developer said there should be no cap :/
I run a decent gaming PC with a 2070 and a i7 12700k. At 1000 pop i got about 15-20 fps, I use blank space to pause a lot :'D

I am running an i9 and a 3080ti, and a really good m.2 drive. The lag is bad enough at 700 pop that I have no intention of trying 1000. I don't even know how you managed to suffer through it lol

Pretty simular to mine, and yeah....i cant imagine the fps at 1000 people, he must be down to 10-20fps, its not playable and all menus start to lag.

Ive had my fun with this game but if i cant expand beyond 200-300 people before the fps renders the game unplayable, i guess iots waiting time.

Dev's answer to your post is old and has been rectified since :

Population is currently hard capped at 1000 for performance reasons. We'll remove this restriction as more optimization is done during early access.

So when this came up a few days ago, I said there is no cap and if population stops increasing that is a bug, but I've been filled in that in fact a cap was applied for Early Access.

I guess it was added so nobody was complaining that they were getting 2 fps at 2000 population, haha. In town builders, there's inevitably going to be a point where hardware can't keep up with crazy populations, but I'm confident we can squeeze out better results with further optimization. The cap, in any case, is a temporary measure.

Congrats on getting to 1k!

yep, 2 weeks i got 1k pop and fps 0-20 , depends on game speed. (2k resolution , i7-8700+rtx3070ti+32GbRAM+m2 ssd)
and yes, atm 1k pop is max, it is limited . but there is no cap in general , after devs will fix current problems , looks like they will remove this limit

Cap or no cap, I'm currently at 650 pop and game is chugging.
TimberPL Feb 24, 2023 @ 7:40am
I will come back to this absolutely great game when there will be no population cap. With the current limit, the game makes no sense.

Who cares about FPS on this type of game! This game isn't about graphics anyway. This game should be measured in processing power and ram, mostly.

I usually hit a glass ceiling around 300-400 people. As soon as that happens, the population begins to dwindle and I never get caught back up.
