Fields and Grazing
What exactly determines where grazing can be set? And how is fodder quality calculated?

Moving the graze grid over my fields I saw some 10x5 fields where only half (a 5x5 area) the field was allowed and I saw some with a weird checkered pattern where it was allowed.

For the 10x5 I tried planting clover and maintenance but nothing seemed to change. I had two of these 10x5 next to each other so I deleted one and made the other 10x10. The new area could be grazed but the original half (now a quarter) still couldn't be.

I think that cows can only graze on farms that are growing clover. Not sure as I haven't tried it myself yet.

I haven't tried what you're saying yet. I've only ever cleared the land where I wanted them to graze, penned it in, checked the make milk button, and ran with it. Be interesting if clover fields or even letting them graze on Wheat or Rye had a difference in their quality tho.

So just made two discoveries after testing. I'm going to use pasture and non-pasture in place of qualified for grazing and unqualified.

First, when you remove a farm tile that was non-pasture it remains non-pasture until the beginning of the year, at which point it resets to pasture. This is how I got the half pasture half non-pasture farms.

Second, farms added via expansion seem to completely ignore whatever mechanic makes a farm pasture or non-pasture.

Tried building a few more 5x5 farms and some started as pasture and some didn't.

I played a map which nearly everywhere is dry and not fertilitied.
even the land is not red when moving the graze grid has 0~35% fodder quality only.
the quality seems somehow align with the overlay shown by arborist building, but what affecting that is unknown too.
seems water table and fertility has some effect on it, some land do become better when I increase the water by planting trees, but not always.
sometimes it become better when the land is fertilitied by the cows, but I have no method to fertilitize a land is 0 from start.

grazing is 10x10. also if your farm is under 50% fertility i believe, they wont graze on it you have to plant turnips and carrots and let them graze there, clovers dont work as they are not crops i've tried. i haven't tried for the wheat though. dont let them graze on an empty farm, it will just say depleted of fodder
