Desirability
How are people dealing with this in order to get the houses to upgrade. Putting 3 or 4 large parks and then loads of smaller ones along with statues seems a bit crazy to me.

I seem to be putting at least 4 large parks for every 4 houses or so to drive up the desirability with statues and gardens, this isn't how it should be.

One park or plenty of trees should be fine( it is in most games) this is becoming very tedious and I'm thinking of giving up based on this mechanic. There needs to be better ways to increase the desirability. Anyone got any tips to help me out.

I build a row of houses, put a row of medium gardens behind them and then another row of houses. That makes it easy to get them upgrading once you have a market and are generating tax income. I'll also leave spaces in other parts of the town for parks, statues, shrines and of course the healer, bakery, school and pub.

Decorations of the same type don't stack, so vary them and stagger where they're built.
Also your town is gorgeous btw.

Last night when I upgraded the small plaza built on the roads to the next level it raised desirability by 1% for each one.

Market plus school plus healer then decor, then theater plus pub. You really don't need all that much decor. I use the line garden. Put down some houses leave a little room drop down a few line gardens (not sure what they are really called). You should be able to get them to 65 with that.

To get the houses to max level, you need desirability above 90% so they don't get abandoned. You will need to put all the decorations i have to reach those numbers along with plaza's.

They do stack but at 1 or 2 percent increases but I get your point. To hit high numbers of 90%, decorations are gonna have to be everywhere so houses can become max level.
I just did this https://imgur.com/a/6QaQIJ1 to see the results and ok you don't have to put the excessive amount of decorations I did but you still need a fair few buildings for 8 houses. This will become expensive in the long run to sustain it if you choose to upgrade houses to max level?. The desirability needs to be more wider because if I build more houses behind the theatre and market, their desirability wont be so high

I dont think its intended to get desirability up everywhere. I feel like it makes sense. In neighborhoods with higher land value, there is more amenities than in places with smaller land value, so having high desirability would mean more nearby amenities, including parks and decor

I also feel like desirability expectations should be tuned down or desirability bonus of decorations should be tuned up. Because as op said the amount of decorations you need to get to 90% is ridiculous. Even with upgraded decorations you still need a fair amount of them to get over 65. For 90 this goes into ridiculous amounts.

A district of houses say like 10 of them should not need more than 3-4 decorations. Lets not say it with quantity but how large of the area is decorations. 10 houses is 90 squares. So, in my opinion, decorations should not take space of more than 15-20 squares. Area wise 20% is fine I guess.

Also some of buildings like theatres or schools should give global desirability bonus, not just a big surrounding area bonus. I mean, which town with 500 people has 3-4 theatres or schools? It's so unrealistic.

Put space in between the house , build 3 small garden . Each house group must be inside a market radius . Sometime you may have to throw in some shrine too .
My first mistake was building house too close too each other :/

Four houses in a square with one gap inbetween. Put four garden trails, then either a beekeeper or shrub in the middle.

Did something similar in another play through but even looking at you pics, you still need to put down excessive amounts of decorations. It does look nice but just seems unrealistic to me.

no excessive amounts needed. I have hospital, school, theater, place (hiddenunderneath road) and some biggen gardens + statues. It is enough to get lots of house to max upgrades

this is an older pic by now. I expanded the city and can still build houses close together with most of them upgraded to max. Can upload a picture later if interested

I do feel like the scaling of desirability is kinda off.

At the beginning I struggled to get it to 30, so I placed lot of decorations.
With more and more houses upgrading and adding bakery, school and healer it went trough the roof.

I had in the end around 120% instead of 85% needed for the highest buildings.

So I moved some gardens to other areas to boost their desirability and added in houses instead.

I would not say it is the scaling but rather the understanding of what affects desirability. For me it was voodoo too at 1st. When I understood what it depends on it became easy enough to not make me struggle with max upgrades for houses. Reducing the requirements would make it to easy

I set the houses back from the road one square and leave one space between the houses so they can be surrounded by desirability upgrades. My houses have no less than 130 desirability. Also schools, pubs and parks within range...after school one needs to drink and pass out in a park.
