Workshop, and why it's needed urgently
There are mods available out there already, but they aren't verified in any way, making it risky to install, to say the least.

Developers, can you please set up a workshop on Steam for this game, before any of your customers gets problems because they download from external sites?

And, yes, this game definitely needs mods.

Another way of doing it is to share them on your own sites, like other developers do in the alpha and beta phases of their games. Or on Discord. Do you have a Discord.channel?

Crate will probably add modding tools nearer to full release of the game, but they'd prefer players not to use mods during early access if they're reporting bugs since a mod could be the cause of any problems. Whether they'll add Workshop support we'll just have to wait and see. They didn't think it was worth the time/effort for Grim Dawn. They certainly won't be doing it now that's for sure; early access is expected to last 8-12 months so will be a while before any official modding support is available.

In any case I suspect once the game officially has modding tools there'll be plenty that are put on the official FF forum. And there's nothing wrong with downloading from sites like Mega, Nexus, ModDB, etc. They're perfectly legit sites and all the GD mods are available on at least one or more of them.

Look at how they did it in Foundation. Modding was an integral part of the game, and was encouraged from the start. In my opinion a much better way of doing it.
When a site, like Nexus, requires you to install a program to handle the mods, I say NO, with capital letters. A mod that I can open with an editor, to check what it's doing, and without the need for third-party software to run, that's ok though.

Except our official stance is NOT to use mods during Early Access because they interfere with testing and debugging. We've already had a number of false positives that took up our time because someone used a mod to do something janky in the game.

We are happy to support mods...when it is appropriate to do so. That means closer to release. Just like we did with Grim Dawn.

Then you get another problem: All the bugs, all at once, delaying the final version. I think, when going for mods as an option, that clearing any bugs at an early stage would be much better. But that's just me. :steamhappy:

Seriously, only crazy people will increase unknown quantity during testing and debug stage... Especially an early access which intended to have bug reports return...

Stop your unrealistic demand please.

I mentioned Foundation, have you ever played it? They did it that way, and cleaned out all the bugs, in the early access phase. To me that seems like the smartest way of doing things.

Bugs are being cleaned out in FF too so ....

And you never manage to get rid of all the bugs/errors/etc in a game. Still find the odd one in GD 10 years on.

You should definitely add some kind of check if version is modded or not to avoid fixing bugs on modded game. Mods should not be that prevalent in alpha phase.

Sounds reasonable and well thought out. I can wait for mods, Ea will change much anyway, maybe?

I agree. But....spend some time on not needing the mods. I'd prefer to have some of this stuff in xml files to make the mods less "worrisome to trust". I first tried to figure out how to edit the game files cause I was like WTF, I can move a blueberry bush but not a hawthorn bush? WTF 2000 sand on my map, I am going to add more at least the ability to jack up the amount. I mean some of the resources have like 400? 400? Like enough for one year of mining, WTF. That deer colony just died cause I happened to build over their spawn point? But the whole family of 8 are still there.

Early on, you can't chase non bugs. But if your game has some basic issues, almost everyone will be using the mods...and then well that attitude will be broken.
