Anything you want to sell has to be transferred to the trade floor (maximum 500 per item, except gold). All transactions are done on the trade floor. When you move the items or gold ingots to "global storage," they are never actually carried away. Gold stays in your trade storage (to which you have no visibility) and items you purchase go there as well. Your traders will never carry either away (they will only carry items to the trading post). It will however be available for use by your villagers. They will come there to get the items they need (assuming it is closer than a storage with similar items). Food can rot in trade storage and gold can be raided in trade storage, but trade storage will never be full (even if you get the barrel icon over the trading post).
This feature can be exploited to have more gold in your town than you have vault's to fill.
the trading post is a great way to make money by selling extra resources like pottery, clothing, soap, candles, armor, etc. its also helpful to buy resources that you're in low supply of and you'll need it to buy animals for your barn.
