I can never get them to live in the damn things. they need to add an assign to housing button or something.
Temp homes are only used during extreme weather when they normally seek shelter. They will also go to them for food. So during winter break they stay in the temp home and when hungry they go to it instead of hiking to the nearest food storage building. They never transfer out of their town home.
If you're worried about losing resources (in this case your stone and logs), making sure you have a wagon operating keeps the camp's internal storage as empty as possible just in case raiders do go for your camp. But they have an unhealthy obsession with destroying gates so having gates around baits them away from your buildings.
