Necromancer: Dark Knight has an aoe attack, but is otherwise a smarter Berserker. The witch debuffs/weakens enemies and makes the DK and Summoner do more spell damage, and the summoner brings out a zombie and has a shadowbolt.
Peasants: are basically crappy versions of the Knight, spearman, and archer. The big Cletus knight's shield breaks after a few hits, unlike other knight classes. The grandma is the archer throwing knives here.
Baroness: Slightly more offensively focused versions of the Knight and Archer, the spearman is an 'exotic' Berserker. Pretty straight forward.
Before the Warlock summoner was added, the Necro Summoner was a potent choice just for disposable meatshields. The Warlock can bring some beef though, so the necro summoner has dropped a few ranks in my personal tier list.
The Necromancer's mercenaries are all very good, I think. The Summoner has good single target damage and a summon to drop down in between, which is very nice. The Afflictor brings both debuffs and shields, which is a nice combination. The Dark Knight is just a very solid frontliner and definitely deserves recognition.
The Baroness... I'm not a big fan of most of her units. The Guard is pretty good, but the Pikeman and Crossbowman both feel like worse alternatives to anything you can muster. Why bring a Crossbowman who will run toward the enemy between shots when you can get an Archer who will pepper the enemies to death without ever wasting any time? And the Maceman seems like a straight upgrade to the Pikeman.
As for the Peasants, I'm likewise not a big fan of either the Pitchfork or the Fence guy. However, that Granny? That Granny is pretty dang good! She looks like a worse archer at first glance, but her real power is that she does good damage while knocking enemies down at a distance. You have no idea how many wipes I prevented by dropping the Granny down and specifically telling her to go after a backliner with high damage potential, like a high level Archer or Pyromancer. The Granny prevents things from ending poorly.
Finally, I want to talk about the two bandit options you can hire. They're both FANTASTIC. The Brigand can lock enemies in place, which is fantastic for ranged builds (and frankly high ranged damage seems like the best way to play right now), and the Bandit melee unit is an amazing tank in part because he has Shield Bash, a good knockdown ability. Tanking while knocking enemies down is good.
Grandma can if you level her right basically Forever stunlock any melee Charachter with no Ranged block. I think you need agility.
Then theres the Shield Guy who has no cooldown on his block which makes him the Perfect Ranged Blocker compared to Knight. What this guy needs is a command to just Stay infront of any friendly charachter. I think he would make the perfect mobile Pavese shield for any Ranged Unit.
Necros Got really good synergy between Units with the Curse buff, so I guess if you use them you kind of should go all in using all of them together.
Baroness Seem kinda weak, altough for big fights their strenght in number buff shouldnt be dismissed. I can't remember what the biggest battles in this games are.
I imagine they can be good Bosskillers. if you can field like 10 Units they get a 100% Buff on their main stat I believe?
Nontheless feels like the hardest to use and to gimmicky to actually be useful.
Edit: Actually Baroness Buff only goes up to 70%, also I found out the Shield guy sadly has a Block Cooldown, so he's not unique in that sense aswell :/
I'd say the Guard being similar to the Knight actually is a strong point for the Baroness. That 100% strength modifier when you have 10 guys on the field actually makes the Guard incredibly capable. The pikeman, however, feels very gimmicky to use, with a limited window of opportunity to deal his damage before he is effectively useless; and the crossbowman is pretty awful compared to the standard archer.
The Peasants, again... I love the granny, but I'm not a big fan of the other two. I COULD see an argument being made for Fency Guy, though.
Honestly, I'd argue the situation boils down to this:
NECROMANCER: Every unit is useful and has synergy with each other.
BARONESS: One unit is useful but every unit has synergy with each other.
PEASANTS: 1-2 units are useful and there's no synergy between the units.
Tank: Rhino
DD: Archer or Summoner, sometimes pyromancer
Heal: Priestess
Support: Hookbot, Skeleton mage
