Grinding Question
So, I'm getting a little bit into this game. I think... chapter 6? Just finished the second Digital Shift area, with the missing people.

I started CS a while back, but got distracted with other things. Restarted recently and ended up spinning my proverbial wheels, then started over. So, in essence, it's still my first run, so I don't really know what to expect.

But, I'm beginning to notice a significant difficulty spike with some of these bosses. This last one, I had two Ultimates and a Champion (Data/Virus/Vaccine) and I barely scraped through. I only have one farm, and I can't change personalities, yet, and the areas I have access to don't exactly give huge amounts of exp so I can't easily grind to higher levels than I'm already at (outside of spending four hours beating up In-Training and Rookie mons).

Does the game really expect me to tailor my team to boss fights? Am I really meant to spend time on the side evolving and de-evolving mons to fill out the "dex" and raise multiple different mons to mix'n'match each major battle?

Yes, you need to tailor your team like what you thought of, thus the side quests & grinding. Do note that there are skills for you to pick & learn to improve the battle situation, if you still prefer to use your preferred Digimon then you have to brute force via level & item

On normal mode you should be fine with having 1 mon for every type and 1 typeless mon so you're never in a situation of dealing half damage and receiving double. Don't expect it to work on hard mode, you'll have to put in more work. Piercing attacks, transferring skills and support skills. Personalities don't matter until post game.

Easy xp farm: 2 platinum sukamon, equip them with tactical USB. 1 mon that can kill wild mons.
Always have a typeless mon for forced encounters. Stingmon or infermon will work. Stingmon has a piercing attack, good against eaters.

Sadly you will have to farm for Tactical USBs, I really wish that the game could be balanced to not require it, I can't imagine people beating the game without it.

You will see everywhere about Platinum Sukamons but due party memory limitations it will take some time for you to effectively be able to use them, so the Tactical USB are your best bet, earliest that you can start farming are at chapter 4 with a super low chance, but I'm speaking by head so it's better for you to watch a guide.

About the battles you can get out pretty much as long you're not using a oposing type, but endgame you want Digimons with Int penetrating skills, you can have two DPS and one Support digimon, field and booster skills are essential.
Use your farm to level up more Digimons, you really want to exploit the bosses weakness.
