Should I hit max level before digivolving?
I was wondering if I should max out before digivolving my digimons. I have several rookies who are already level 20+ and would have digivolved ages ago but I'm not sure if it's healthy for their stats and potential max level (I don't want to get my head around the ABI formula thing and just want a definitive procedure).

My worry is that if let's say a rookie is able to digivolve on level 15 and I just digivolve right there, it would stunt my champion digimon's growth if I didn't hit max level before.

So yeah, I am feeling impatient sometimes. This game is definitely grindy, but I also prefer to be efficient. Should I hit max levels always before digivolving?

I checked some max levels before digivolving and sometimes there was no difference in level cap increase depending on level, other times I saw that leveling my digimon like 10 levels only increased final digimons max level by only 2 levels. So not really worth the grind in early game especially. Later on you'll have excellent exp farming opportunities and then that might be worth considering (for ABI purposes mainly).

TL:DR- At those low levels you mentioned (20 or so) there won't really be a difference, later on you'll have to digivolve/de-digivolve those digimon several times over anyway. And digivolving gives a huge level cap increase later on so you shouldn't worry about evolving rookies too soon.

Sure if you have the time, otherwise just digivolve first

In the late game, leveling is never an issue, so you can do power leveling to spam ABI grinding

Uhm, will it affect my digimon's growth? I know that digimons return to level 1 from let's say they just digivolved to their champion form. My worry is that the champion's max level is stunted if their rookie form didn't max out first.

Thats a bit hard to answer as people are divided on this. While I can say that the First Game on the Vita had obvious pre set Stats for Digimon I cannot say the same with the Complete Edition as the Second Game got some Improvements that also got added to the first.

In this one it has felt to me that most if not all the Stats carry over, but I could be wrong. I have always Maxed my Level before Digivolving or De Digivolving. The only way to know for sure is to do some Test yourself if you have the time. Either way the Megas do have a Hard Cap for Stats that I think Training might get past, but I have yet to hit End Game myself so I cant tell you for sure. Sorry I am not much help.

I reached maximum level then de-digivolved. I was able to beat the last boss with a Champion level Digimon (Gatomon) because of this.

I see. Right now I am mostly maxing out with my champions before digivolving them and I'll do the same with the ultimates. As for rookies though I can't stand looking at them because it feels like they'll get squashed.

I mean, in a certain parts of the story, it annoyed me that I was fighting champions with level 20+ rookies.
