Whatever I would say, you would turn it into a 'subjectivity' sorta thing, and twist it around to suit your preference. You dont come off as some intellectual, as much as you see yourself as, you come off as pretentious ♥♥♥♥, and it saddens me that youve spent so much time on this thread after I posted this / ignored you months ago. You seriously seem to have nothing better to do, then defend the piss-poor writing in a Digimon game.
Do what you want with your life, but I got better things to do. Unsubbing again from this thread. Whenever Steam feels the need I'm sure I'll get a notification again somehow. I shall check with this stupidity later.
There is objective good, i just don't want to follow it.
In other words, i'm not postmodernist, i'm metamodernist.
There are objective good stories... i just don't like them as much as objectively bad stories.
Either way, i enjoy writing in this game way more than in most other Japanese games.
They are usually very overly dramatic, which annoys me.
While this game is lighthearted and fun.
There's no need to be angry, i want to be civil with you.
I apologize for making this impression, but i'm not a follower of Subjectivity.
There are good stories. And there are bad stories.
So what am i to do when i enjoy bad stories more than good stories?
I know that those are bad stories. But i simply enjoy them more.
I agree that the writing styles are different between the East and West, but not in a way that you can't tell an obviously poorly written story from a good one. Story boarding is a skill that is taught. You can learn "how" to write. There are tons of manga, anime, and video games out there that adhere to universal standards of writing, cuz they work. In japan, western theories and styles are indeed taught in many areas. Sure a western book reads from front to back and a manga reads from back to front, but if you read any popular western book and a popular manga, you're going to notice very similar structures and rules. A story isn't something you can just serve up front ways, backwards, sideways, upside down, anyhow, and in any direction. Not if your goal is to tell a satisfying story.
My standards are higher than some people though and I'm aware of that (my GF points this out often). I'm a writer myself, of poetry and short stories. I run a writing club and I've taken an interest in story telling and writing from jr. high through college. So maybe I can be a little harsh. It's not like I didn't finish the game. I sank 50 hours into it, but I just think the game could have done a lot better. I love reading, but that's exactly why I have a problem with this game. I already said earlier on that the main plot itself is very interesting and good, the problem is the supportive writing. Everything else written around the main plot is extremely lazy, and there is A LOT of supportive writing in this game to get through.
I also have a high standarts of a story... in which most modern stories don't satisfy me.
However, i love Monster of the Week Anime, like Sailor Moon from 90s. And my favorite Season is Sailor Moon Super S, the most disliked season due to amount of filler. I love when story has tons of pointless stuff. I love fillers. And Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth gives me those vibes.
One moment you love it, one moment you hate it...just fits your narrative.
Honest to god, you are the most pretentious person I have had the displeasure to read in a long time.
No matter what, you cant be wrong. No matter what, you're not right. You just want attention, and someone to say "You got a good point".
But you don't. You constantly contradict yourself, either defending the story, or saying you dont care because 'youre above it being a piece of garbage'. EIther way, you seem like a narcissistic person, and you really need to take a step back and figure out if this is the person you want to be, or the hill you want to die on.
Last thing I will say is STOP ADDING ME. I will not speak with you on a private level until you 've at least shown some self-awareness above that of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ goldfish. I have nothing to say, or talk to you about, til you stop contradicting yourself, and want to actually speak as a person. Not a psuedo-intellectual that will just contradict anything he hears to seem edgy or smart.
Please though, stop adding me. I have nothing to say to you besides what has already been said on here, and this thread would be dead if it wasnt for your attention-seeking attitude keeping it going.
♥♥♥♥ yourself, and have a nice day.
This whole thread made me hate this game more. I would have forgiven it if we could have had fun in this thread, but instead it was all defensive, angry, and trivial. No one could admit the faults, and think that this is, somehow, a perfect game.
It's not, and now I wonder if I'll ever finish the next part of the story. Not for it's fault, but for the sour taste this community has put in my mouth for merely being critiical of its presentation.
And, I wasnt criticial on stupid ♥♥♥♥, just on its pacing.
But that became a big thing. Because, and this is heavy sarcasm, "I dont know JRPGS."
Forget I grew up on NES version of Final Fantasy.
Forget I grew up on Diablo, Age of Empires, and Daggerfall.
Forget I grew up on Alkabeth, or Beneath a Steel Sky.
I simply dont know good stories or text adventures.
Digimon could be great, but is community drags it down. We accept mediocre games, shows, and ports, just because its SOMETHING. And I get the thirst.
I been wanting the old Digimon to come back for years. But this is NOT, how I want it. It should be better than this. If you guys want to accept it, thats your standard, but I dont have to make it mine.
I look forward to the day where Digimon can be taken in concept as seriously as it deserves to. It is a good story, and, when you go back to the OG series, has some amazing characters.
This game forgot about that in the name of nostalgia, but a few hyper fans in this forum seem to not see that. They were just desperate for a new Digimon game.
Doesnt matter if we have no connection to our Digimon. Or have to raise or feed them. Or have to treat them when fully injured (outside potions...which congrats...you did what every RPG since the 80's has done), or even have a real relationship with them.
Nah, lets just collect em all and become a knock off Pokemon, and forget what Digimon was about. Which was about the connection and character development of the creatures and the person.
And, you could say Pokemon did that too, and least with Pikachu, but Digimon def did that better.
My ramble is reaching its end. I dont know how much more I can drive this point home, but this gameis NOT, a good Digimon RPG. There are so many better ideas this franchise deserves, and sucking the ♥♥♥♥ of this is only giving Bandai more right to print more of this quality of content, when we all know we want better.
Point is, we want better. Stop praising garbage. Give it the criticism it deserves. Dont just give it high ratings because you are afraid they never will do another one again. Give it the pure critique it deserves, and support it where you feel it has actually earned it.
This has been my Ted Talk. Have a good night.
Edit : I'm half cut. Had to fix some stuff. May have to fix others later.
You and I could have a lot to talk about.
Been a while since I been writing, but I can understand your points here. Thanks for the back up, as well as the slap for what I may be wrong about (not thinking about some supportive writing being crucial - though, gotta admit, most could be cut). It's nice to hear.
Add me if you wanna chat writing.
Had to add this thought.
Once Digimon started becoming a 4-8 party system, it started copying, or trying to emulate, the success of the Pokemon series. It was at its best when it focused on 1 player, with 1 Digimon partner.
Yes, i'm narcisstic. But i try to be objective, even though i almost always fail.
Of course i always contradict myself, because i come here in a relaxed state of mind, and i forget about arguements i made, because every day i'm like a different person!
One day i'm calm, other day i'm paranoid, other day i'm solemn, other day i'm happy, other day i'm angry... and it doesn't even depend on what stuff i experience. I'm literally having mood swings just because.
Not only that, i literally have NO point of view. I change my opinions every day. My arguements are based on what i think at the moment, not at the knowledge i have.
And yes, i perfectly realize how stupid it is. But that's just how my darn mindset works. I have schizophrenia.
That's why i want to add you to friend list, to explain that you got the wrong impression on me because this situation and the responses you got from me have shown you only the mindset i had when i wrote such messages.`
It's MEDIOCRE. It doesn't stand up to the good old JRPGs like SNES and PS1 JRPGs. It can't stand up to Xenogears and Xenosaga. It can't stand up to Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne.
However... it's basically first Digimon game i got deeply drawn into. And the reasons for this are:
Music. I enjoy it. This electronic music counds way better than dubstep turn today games gave.
Visuals. Even though i don't like most modern anime styles and i prefer 90's Anime style, the style of Digimon Story characters did appeal to me somehow, and i cannot explain how.
Overall feel. I expected something like Pokemon, but in the end got something similar to Shin Megami Tensei games. Detective plot like in Devil Summoner. Tokyo map like in old Shin Megami Tensei games. Some very dark moments that made me think of Shin Megami Tensei IV. And never mind Persona, it's a darn mainstream spin-off, don't let it cloud your judgement of Shin Megami Tensei, the real main series.
And this game made me to look more into Digimon, i've checked few moments of it, and realized that it's much more serious anime than Pokemon.
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth might be mediocre... but why people can't enjoy darn mediocre games?! Is it darn forbidden? People are allowed to enjoy only High-Quality products?!?!
You say you've played Final Fantasy? Then you know how much Final Fantasy 2 on NES is bad. It has weird leveling system.
And I LOVE IT.
What else... Final Fantasy 5 is often disregarded by main FF audience... I LOVE FF5.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is considered to be a bad game... I LOVE IT AS WELL!
And no... it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM BEING BAD.
It's because I PERSONALLY ENJOY THEM. It's just so happened, BY A DARN COINCIDENCE that those games are considered to be bad!
Maybe it's some sort of darn psychological thing i have.
Because elements of those games are disregarded by successful titles, successful titles don't have elements of Bad games that i enjoy.
Final Fantasy X-2 is obviously a bad game. I perfectly understand all it's issues on why it's bad.
Yet somehow, i love it. It provides some sort of ATMOSPHERE to me when i play it. The visuals, the world, the music. It just looks so darn unique compared to most JRPGs today.
To me, the thing in videogames i enjoy is not the story... nor the gameplay... and not the visuals... But it's the Music, Lore and Aesthethic.
And i'm such an WEIRD IDIOT that i enjoy very strange things. Stuff that is not considred to eb aesthethic, i somehow enjoy.
OF COURSE I KNOW HOW WRONG I AM. Tell me at least how i should PRESENT my take on stuff i see?
