The dialog is so damn BORING
oh boy, I like Digimon, but this is too much, the dialog is so repetitive and uninteresting, I have a really hard time keeping my attention on the dialog, fight are OK enough, I don't want to stop playing mid way through but I think I can't play the game for the combat alone because I get so damn bored...

Don't know at what point you're at, but the first 5-10 chapters are a lot more dialog heavy. After a while the dungeons get bigger and the pacing gets better.

on top of the trite dialogue and terrible characters outside some interesting ones like kyoko and date, the translation is also a complete miss sometimes with wrong subjects/objects. I honestly think you should just skip a lot of it and just either ask kyoko or mirei for directions.

haven't got to them on the pc version yet but I remember liking hacker's memory a heck lot more than cyber sleuth though in story and character department when I played the game on ps4.

"boring" and long dialog is to be expected since this is a rpg after all, (a very visual novel-like one too) it sucks that there's no option to skip dialogue/cutscenes for a second or even third playthrough

not really but sure use that as a justification.

have you played any other jrpg before? most of them go through long stretches of time with no action whatsoever, just dialogue/cutscenes
Entelechia May 15, 2021 @ 5:00am
we're never talking about long scenes here, long scenes do not necessarily mean 'boring'. I finally got to hacker's memory on my pc playthrough and the dialogue is leap and bounds better than the often nonsensical cyber sleuth one.

but sure believe that. idgaf lol.

you haven't answered my question yet.

but indeed the dialogue in hacker's memory is better, the HM characters are also way batter too imo, but that is subjective

But dialog is so uninteresting, repetitive and redundant, that's what makes me bored, Persona 4 is even more text heavy than this game and is also a lot more entertaining.

Then leave a review and move on. I'm not sure what you expect from people in this thread really. It's okay to not like something.

I enjoyed the game personally even if some of the dialog really did drag on to the point of going beyond what is welcome. Probably not a game I will play twice given there is no way to skip dialog at all. The story was nothing to write home about but it wasn't the worst either. It was... Okay. Nothing remarkable but I didn't expect it to be and that is perhaps why I am getting my money worth out of it.

I could probably endure the long boring nonsensical cutscenes if the gameplay actually felt like digimon. Instead battles are more about having the right digimon at the right time, rather than actually building them properly. Types dictate fights too much and is probably why there are crazy difficulty spikes and drops constantly. This game was just so offensive I had to drop it to play one of the ds games. Also the character designs look like they were made by a hentai artist. Which I guess is cool, but really weird seeing in a digimon game since you're usually playing as a kid.

it's a monster catching game. it's always been about type matching and having the right digimon for the right battle. if you can't deal with that, monster catching game is not for you (or just play super easy ones like pokemon I guess).

I wish it kept revolving around that but with more sophisticated mechanics later on instead of just 'get digimon with penetrating moves, forget everything else'.

The problem with most of the dialogue is that it's mostly techno babble to explain how the characters can do what they do, which is really unnecessary. The amount of times they go on a long winded exposition spiel, followed by "in other words" and basically saying the same thing again has made me skip most of the dialogue. I don't need or want super detailed explanations on why stuff is happening. Just get on with it. I hate it when they do this in any media. Just say shrink ray or digitized or whatever instead of going all Reed Richards about it.

As far as the gameplay goes, what really bugged me was that the Digimon were kind of sidelined in a way. Most of the time we're dealing and doing stuff with human characters with the Digimon as a backdrop. They feel less like sentient beings and more just typical mons (outside of the Royal Knights and the odd case specific mons). The fact that most of the text heavy side quests offer no XP for your party Digimon is insulting.

Still enjoy the games, all in all, but they are heavily flawed. The way Digi/evolutions are handled is probably my favourite aspect of it.

I'm saying types are flawed and boring, elements are alright. It becomes too much about types and just hampers everything. This game tries too much and it just doesnt work. seeing how there are even worse mechanics later you really just proved my point. Also im not sure why you say pokemon is "easier" even though they're essentially the same game, just one has an actual competitive scene.

you can get away with literally just knowing vaccine > virus, data > vaccine, and virus > data. elemental matching don't really matter unless you play on hard so you simply have to rear at least one digimon of each those types and you will easily get through the game.

again if even that's too much for you then look for something else.

the penetrating move part is only really relevant if you want to min max thing and end fights in literal seconds.

lol im not saying it's "too much for me waaaaa." I'm saying it plays too much of a role and makes fights very simplistic, boring, and depending on what you have, very easy or nearly impossible. It's just too extreme and very lame. Elements are more fun to use, but as you say, less effective and matter less. So after sitting through an hour long cutscene, I get to play match the symbols with the enemies in another boring cyber space dungeon for the 100th time. I just can't.
