Belphemon
This is just a random thought that came to my mind since I just got him.

Does anyone else think that Belphemon wasn't put to sleep by Yggdrasil? His bio states that the "System" put him to sleep. But, given that Belphemon looks like a Tamagotchi and has an alarm clock that pretty much IS a Tamagotchi complete with chain and buttons. Do you think that Belphemon actually is a Tamagotchi; Only he was one that was abused to no end.

Given that both Digimon and Tamagotchi share their Morphology to some extent with the major differences between the two being that Tamagotchi are more social and Digimon are more Combative. It would stand to reason that both exist within the same "Cyber Universe", but in two separate Master Servers. Yggdrasil being the known Server for Digimon.

So what if Belphemon is a Tamagotchi that was abused by his owner, and instead of evolving into something abhorrent due to poor care, said Tamagotchi evolved into Belphemon. And out of pure rage attacked his owner. Like in the real world, once a pet goes feral/primal and begins attacking their owners you call animal control who would neutralize said berserk pet through capturing or tranquilizing (or in extreme cases outright elimination). So what if Belphemon was indeed attacking his owner and the overall governing system Neutralized Belphemon (Put him to sleep), but wasn't able to fully delete him, so instead had him transferred into Yggdrasil where he would better fit in amongst the combative Digimon. Kind of how you send off your Tamagotchi back to their home world (Whatever that means), but instead of sending Belphemon to his home world he was sent into Yggdrasil.

It would make sense that he used to be a nice adorable creature (His sleep mode is adorable if a bit demonic), and grew resentful due to being mistreated constantly. But instead of undergoing depression he took it upon himself to strike back at his owner. And given his unrelenting raw strength, he could've been abused pretty horribly, not starved, but physically abused constantly. Causing his body to adapt to the abuse by becoming the Demonically Strong entity that he is now. His Rage Mode self does show visible scarring all over his body, which could have come from the abuse he received.

I don't know, I was just thinking about his design and how he doesn't really have that much information on his origins. Only that he was Put to sleep for being too violent and sealed away due to his power. I figured that since Tamagotchi and Digimon are sister series to each other (Digimon is the spin off, I know), and how Belphemon is a nod to Tamagotchi with his design. It's just the unrelenting rage, scars, hardcore look, and that Bio; all seem a bit off for something that's supposed to be a tribute to a rather peaceful series. We have adorable non-combative digimon that a Tamagotchi nod could've easily fallen into, think MarineAngemon, or any of the In-Training 1 or 2 Digimon, or half the Rookies. So why an Ultra Level Combat Nightmare? Heck, Calumon has the highest Base stats of any Digimon ever and he can't even fight. It's what's leading to believe that Belphemon is indeed a horribly abused Tamagotchi (And one of my favorite Digimon ever).

Belphemon is my favorite Digimon since I love cute things that also have terrifying hidden potential, so I find his lore pretty interesting as well. It's an interesting idea, but I think the strong implication is that Rage Mode is his original form, so it wouldn't make sense for something so un-Tamagotchi-like to originate from the Tamagotchi universe. His Sleep Mode is definitely a reference to Tamagotchi, though, so there may be something there but it's hard to tell.

It's worth noting that Nanimon is heavily implied to be the Tamagotchi character, Oyaji-san, that came from the Tamagotchi world and then adapted to the Digimon world (by gaining boxing gloves, mainly). So there being a link between the two worlds is all but canon.

I did think that Belphemon's Rage mode is a bit too un-tamagotchi like, but the reason why I believe that it can work is because Tamagotchi evolve like digimon do too, but in a social manner. I did say that his "Rage Mode" shows signs of visible scarring which could've come from a very abusive owner.

He wasn't Starved, Neglected, or Ignored. He could've been kept alive by his owner on the notion that Tamagotchi do not evolve into anything violent, but die too quickly if neglected. Just imagine if his owner was a Sociopath who derived pleasure from physically abusing something that's defenseless. So he would keep it alive, but torture it.

Admittedly, just writing out that last paragraph kind of enrages me a bit, because I have this kind of "Defend the Cute" nature that really doesn't like the idea of something cute and innocent getting harmed. But, in Belphemon's case, it's the only thing that makes sense if you take how Biology sort of works. In order for that Tamagotchi to survive such a horrible situation, he had to adapt or die. So, instead of dying he adapted to the abuse and became what he is now: Belphemon Rage Mode, the anger comes from the constant abuse he suffered and his desire to put a stop it.

His sleep mode came afterwards, when the system put him to sleep. It isn't too much of a stretch to think that both forms is how he actually looks. The Anime had a very detailed look at him waking up, and how his muscles took shape as he woke up. It could stand to reason that his sleep mode is how he looks when he's "Relaxed" and not experiencing any kind of psychological torment (I.E. Fear of Abuse which manifests as Uncontrollable Rage).
