Difficulty?
I'm quite tempted by this, but am wondering whether it's more of a child-friendly difficulty or something with enough teeth to keep an experienced strategy gamer interested.

This game has a Hard mode, but it doesn't run away from Normal .... But it's not easy yet
Not equal to SMT for example

Good luck with Hard mode, nightmare fuel bosses if you don't grind and get the right Digis.

I think that hard should be normal, and normal should be easy, because if you play it on normal you literally kill everything with anything (you beat megas with champs/ultimates) without even worrying about attributes or stats and you'll just rush through the game which kinda ruins the experience. Hard mode is actually "hard" only during the first chapter, once you get hatching and lvling it'll become way easier, but this is the only mode that makes sense, as you're forced to pay attention to things like attribute advantages without making it frustrating or impossible.

Good to know. I'll take a look at a video or two, but as long as I can start on hard, that's promising.

As stated above, hard is only "hard" during the very first chapter when you have only one mon to help you in battle. Everything hits a third of your health and you're pretty much screwed if you don't heal or run. The very moment you get some new mons hard mode gets easier and easier, yet you do have to keep in mind attributes and stuff because with the right party you are pretty much ok, but if your mon is weak against some attack, it's dead in one hit.

Standard JRPG stuff where hard is hard because you're lacking tools.

Imo start the game in Normal, switch on Hard once you get a team under your belt and a wrap around your mechanics. Also, grinding is somewhat inevitable if you're optimizing and you want to "catch them all". I heard there's also post-game stuff and online PvP.

#$%# my poverty.

Better yet, play on Normal. The game has New Game+ feature. Use that and go for Hard when you have your team and everything settled up. The first playthrough is usually a blind one and you will be baffled/suddenly losing against specific parts of the story mode if you are not careful enough or cocky enough to get busted.

Avoid hard, at hard mode in the beginning you will basically be insta game over and load your save file. On hard you would have to be basically the overly cautious hero from Shinchou Yuusha.

I should have read this thread before starting on hard mode, 2 Kurumon wiped me 2 times during the prologue, I was lucky the 3rd time only because I got 1v1 battles.

You're most likely over leveled. At the beginning on hard the enemies will curb stomp you, especially if you get two against one of yours, the damage difference from normal to hard anyways is 1.5x times I think, if on normal at max they did 100 damage, on hard they're doing 150 at max. While you also do 2x less damage to them on hard compared to normal.
