reduce sanity travel rate and startup time (mounts not called the tortoise, mount saddles, multiple family photo equipable items, cane weapon). Certain items can be used to make shortcuts like dynamite and the water wand. These can also reduce travel time in a sense.
use weapons that reduce sanity loss on terrain (machete for trees, rope for swamps). You can take them off and equip a better weapon for actual fights (ditto for the cane weapon).
Get a cook. Bonus points if you get a hunting dog or a raptor. That's a VERY self-sustaining combo. It's so strong you might find yourself in the trap of constantly taking cooks/dogs rather than trying out new characters.
Buy a tent. Tents will delay you but you'll never have to worry about running out of sanity ever again as long as you're willing to slow down a bit (and REALLY slow down if you get over taken with fog). A scrollmaster coming along can get rid of the fog issues with a bit of luck.
Faction items - the record player is a reusable item that gives you some sanity every X moves, and the teleporter can save you some travel sanity if you use it properly (even in it's super duper nerfed state). The Tea item is pretty good too. While it doesn't help directly with sanity, carrier pigeons are very useful for getting items out of your inventory without having to trek back to the ship or a monastery.
Make expeditions during your expedition - if you don't feel like you have any ability to sustain on long travel, go out a bit then come back to the ship to rest. Due this a few times in multiple directions till you get a good sense of where you are and other places might be (like another campsite or village). You can climb mountains for a MASSIVE sight increase (even if it costs some extra sanity.
Eventually with some practice you'll find that you're able to explore whole islands with no real worries about sanity.
As well as items and perks that can reduce this cost, it's also one of the core ways the game is easier/harder based on difficulty - it's a default of 10 on Lunatic mode, but only 3 on Traveller.
